I just expect the grocery store to make a mistake EVERY time I shop. Usually something is supposed to be on sale and it rings up at regular price, but now lately it's happening at nurseries!
Almost every time I get home from Home Depot, Lowe's, Red Barn, etc. and begin to enter my purchases on my data base, I'm either over charged or undercharged...sometimes as much as $20 when I buy large amounts of plants! I think the checkout people (most of them, at least) don't bother to be accurate or are too lazy to go check a price and just make one up! I'm usually too tired / excited / distracted by thoughts of what I missed, plans for when I get home, etc. to watch what they are doing at the moment. A few days ago I bought 10 of something and was charged for 12. Before I could call them, I went to another place reminded the checker of a flat of plants on the lower level of my cart and they still didn't get scanned. Perhaps those scanners don't work half the time?
I guess it all evens out eventually! :-)
Does this happen to y'all also?
UNDERcharged / OVERcharged at Big Box Nurseries?
You know, I've never really watched it very closely but I imagine that it does. I'll have to be more vigilant this year!
I like the way my favorite local family-owned nursery handles things. All their pots are color-coded by size (which I assume other nurseries do, as well). A green potted perennial is $8.99 (or whatever), while a black pot is $10.99 and a terra cotta colored pot is $12.99 and so on. They carefully call out the prices as they ring up the items. I also often get comments on the plants. ("This was in a greenhouse, so make sure you harden it off before you plant it in the ground." Etc.)
The private nurseries may cost more, but I do like that kind of service. Then again, my local Wal-Mart must have a great manager in the garden center area, because they always have some killer plants that I just can't resist. And the prices are right!
yes, but i usually add things up in my head, either as i go or i will pull cart to the side and figure before i reach register. If it is too far off, i question it. If something is on sale i always make it a point to make sure they ring it up correctly because too many times those items are not in the system. You can always take a calculator with you.
Lowes has got to be the worst at this....several times they hve overcharged me on plants, a few times I was halfway out the door when I double checked my receipt then had to go stand in the return lane so they could re=do the order aarrgghhh and waiting for a manager to over ride the clearance pricing...well you might as well pack your lunch to eat while you wait for them to come over ride.....
Okay..it has happened again. Sunday I went to Home Cheapo and got lots of landscaping plants as I'm doing a new area. Got 2 free caladiums. But that makes up for the 19 bags of compost they loaded instead of the 20 I paid for!!! haha
