Yarrow question...

Midland City, AL

Can anyone tell me anything about the variety of yarrow called "yellow parka"? I got some baby plants at a plant sale, and I can't find any info on it. My main question is about its size (how tall, wide) and is it as invasive as some of the other yarrows I've read about?

Ayrshire Scotland, United Kingdom

As far as I am aware, all Yarrow is really invasive, I put some in a border 2 years ago with the intention of lifting it out end of season and replanting only a few bits, never got to that job and already, this spring, I will have to dig it out half the border, I love it, so tall, bright yellow and gives a real splash of much needed colour near the end of my flowering season, but the root runners have already crept into other plants and the spring tender tips showing through are already taking over the garden bed, so be warned, IF you really want to plant it with other plants, then I would in future plant it like MINT, keep it in a pot, sink the pot up to almost the top and that way, maybe the root runners will be contained and wont spread everywhere. it is classed as perennial weed in lots of places and in other areas, the wont allow the sale of as it gets into water ways, road verges etc and is classed as a real menace. so be careful. Good luck. WeeNel.

Thenks, Weenel. I've been out of pocket for awhile...
Wow, I didn't know yarrow was THAT much of a problem. That's bordering on thugdom. But I think it's all but a moot point anyway. All but one of the yarrow babies has bit the dust, and the last one has one foot in the grave and the other on a banna peel. Maybe I'd better leave the yarrow well enough alone!

When you Google "Yellow Parka" you don't get any results so I think that maybe you have 'Parker's Variety' which has yellow blooms. That would make it an Achillea filipendulina. Maybe this will help you determine if you'd like to grow it or not. I've never heard of Yarrow being invasive in my area (although the fine-leafed types do spread a little). In fact, the silver-leaf forms just sit there.

I have three types of yarrow in a bed by themselves up next to our shop wall. I haven't had any problems with them wanting to spread. But, by having them in their own bed, we are able to keep the entire front edge of the bed mowed so maybe that helps. This will be their fourth summer in this spot. I really do love the cheerful colors. It's also wonderful to be able to cut several of the flowers for dried arrangements in my house.
