Palm Tree Keeps Blowing Over when in pot

Frisco, TX

I recently purchased a bottle palm tree that is still in the plastic pot it came in. I'm planning on upgrading to a nicer pot, but am concerned that the tree keeps getting blown over by the wind. I bought a new foam pot this weekend, but am having second thoughts. I was thinking that if I got a ceramic pot, it would be heavier and much harder to blow over. Any thoughts or suggestions?

The best and easiest way to prevent a tall potted plant from blowing over in the wind, is to add weight at the base. One can add more soil or rocks to the existing pot if there is room, or transplant into a larger heaver pot. I wouldn't use a foam pot if you are already having problems.

So a ceramic pot should do? If I added rocks, should I add them to the top (after the tree has been planted) or to the bottom (before the tree has been planted)?

Thanks.

From a standpoint of maintaining good drainage in your container, I would not put them in the bottom of the pot. Contrary to popular belief, things like that in the bottom of containers do not promote drainage and actually make it more likely that your roots will be sitting in water for longer.

I'm sure sixfoot realizes he/she needs a drainage hole in the heavier pot.
