Aralia Q

(Zone 7a)

I recently purchased an Aralia from Lowe's. AFTER I get it home, I discover by researching it's care that it's a finicky plant.

Anybody have this? True or false about the difficult care?

Thanks.

I have one and it doesn't seem all that finicky. I had another one before this one that thrived for several years, then I left it in the office over the holidays and the person who was supposed to water it didn't and it died. But I think any plant would have bit the dust with that treatment! I have mine in indirect light near an east facing window, and I water it when it gets dry, and that's about it. I let mine dry out pretty well in between waterings, maybe it's sensitive to overwatering and that's why other people have trouble with it. I tend to not water my house/office plants very often.

Here's the link to Plant Files with information about this plant: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/54631/

I have this plant also ... have had it about 2 years and it seems to do very well. I agree with ecrane3 about the watering. I let mine go completely dry before watering again. It got a bit too wet last summer from sitting out in the rain and started shedding leaves like crazy! So I would keep it on the dry side.

My sister had one of these for a good 20 years that got really tall. She lives in South Florida and kept this plant in her family room. She is not a plant person at all, so if she could keep one alive I think most anyone could. I know mine thrives on neglect. I keep mine outside on a covered deck, bright light but no direct sun.

Okay, thanks for the tips. I don't water my houseplants very much so we should be good.

Hi Kwanjin, every-time I got a plant when I first started to garden, the label said easy care, it died as fast as you could blink, but if it said some degree of difficulty, I never had any problems with them, so go with your instincts and water when needed, plants have a habit of telling us there is something wrong with them, good luck, hope it flourishes for you.
