Have you noticed the leaves of the youngest plants all "chewed" up? I was sure some insect or worm was chomping on the leaves until I interrupted several little finches one
morning. ˇThey don't like all types of rudbeckia -- just the ones with the smoothest surfaced
leaves.
The birds hold onto the stems and really go at it!

I've never noticed finches going after leaves, just the old seed heads!
Did you mean to post this on one of the forums? Cottage gardening, or perennials, or (if you're not a subscriber) maybe Beginner Flowers? I'm just thinking you won't get a lot of responses posting after an article on sweet potato celebrations...
