What's Blooming in April II

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

How do you join the British strep society to get seeds from them, Jim? I have heard people say that the Gesneriad Society takes so long (months) to get the seed and then it is not viable.......I would love to have a source of viable strep seeds.........

Nancy, be sure you go to the Garden Watchdog and post on Thompson and Morgan exactly what you just posted here. If mine don't come up, I am going to rate them negatively.

Gail,
The plant you are in question about a couple posts above this is just beautiful.. Is that one plant? also what size pot is that in? Also do we ever take these plants out from under the lights or is this where they grow all the time? Like if you were to put one on a end table in the living room? Just asking... I love them and let me tell you I never ever would have believed that... You all said I would get the bug and boy have I...LOL

Susan

Gail I am going to contact Thompson Morgan 1st and see if they will send me replacement seeds before I leave them a negative,Maybe they will make it right?? Don't know what their policy is(They probably won't but Its worth a shot..maybe I just did by some fluke get 2 bad packs at the same time.

Hey Susan,Great Bloom on that Episcia you posted a little further up.Do Episcias do pretty well for you?

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Nancy,
I am not sure as that is the only one I have... It seems to have liked me pretty good..

Wow, you all stayed up and partied well into the night last night *lol*
Gail, I am totally HONORED that I have a cup of Spin Art with my name on it :) Thank you my friend! I have a few things here that I'm babysitting for you too :)

I have discovered (hangs her head as her eyes fill) that I have just not grown gessies long enough to be very good with Streps yet. I hit ALOT of hurdles from October now. I lost ALOT of leaves......alot of babies and got VERY discouraged. I now know that if a strep has roots and is established, I know how to keep it alive. However, starting babies from a leaf and getting them to establish healthy root systems and become robust is a HUGE challenge for me. I think the reason they are difficult for me is because they are an epiphyte and their root systems are SO different from the other gessies such as Chirita, AV etc.

I MAY attempt it again this fall but for now I really need to focus on the things that seem to be doing well for me.

This happens to be AV's, Chirita, and Nematanthus. I'm really having pretty good luck with Kohleria too but haven't had one bloom. They do seem to be doing well though so that is encouraging.

From October to about February/March I made MANY MANY mistakes in growing. I had to make lots of changes including soil, humidity, water, fertilizer etc. and am just now really starting to see some major improvements and this is really encouraging me SO MUCH!

I truly would have just given up on some days but because of my friends encouraging me to keep trying, I kept trying and wouldn't give up (even as I stood above the trash can crying and dumping trays of dead strep babies in the trash).
So for those of you out there struggling, keep trying. Read all the WONDERFUL words of advice given here, make changes and most of all..........LOVE and Cherish your plants :)

XO

Have a great day....

My sinningia 1503 that jannich gave me in the fall is finally starting to bloom. I wish that jannich felt better and could see what joy she brought to me.

Keep Jan in your thoughts. She has really felt not good and I have only talked to once on email in the last two weeks. She is not one to whine about anything but I know how poorly she feels with her heart problems.

***can't quite figure out why her blooms are dropping so low unless I didn't give her enough light. Jan's pictures of hers didn't drop like my blooms are. Maybe she just hasn't completely opened up with her two blooms so far.

I know you all must be tired of seeing the same Mackenzie but she has four blooms on her again and a lot .......a lot of buds still to flower.

OMG.......Are those FANTASTIC Gail! SOOOOO pretty!
Poor Jannich, I sure hope she feels better. I will keep her in my thoughts and prayers. Thank you for letting us know Gail.
Those sinningia are just breathtaking. I LOVE that first one :)

I am very sorry Jan is not well.

Gail, your Mackenzie is wonderful. The colors are so pretty. I love the Sinnigia too! The white one you gave me at the sale is blooming nicely.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am thinking Sally, that maybe I gave you a chirita tamiana with white blooms. I don't have a White Sprite sinningia anymore.

(Zone 1)

Love Sinn Mackenzie .... beautiful foliage and blooms! Love that color!

Jan, hope you are feeling better soon! If you are ever peeking in, remember that you are in our thoughts and prayers, always!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

She always makes me think of Jan as Jan sent her to me when she sent all those species which........by the way.......will also be blooming before long. They are covered in buds, including the Sinningia cardinalis 'Innocent' which Rain posted the other day with the bright orange flowers starting to open up.

Let me find a new flower to post.

Here is HCY's Lady Lady starting to fade but what a brilliant color she has

Lin......I am just impatiently waiting for these to get big enough to start new ones so we can all grow more sinningias.
