Thank you ladies! Oooh, I am real excited if you think those on the left may be sinningia's! The only Sinns I have are the micro mini pusilla and rio das pedras. I have wanted to try my hand at one a bit larger. The little mini ones have done so well. It will be great if they are kohleria's too cause I don't have any of those. I got one kohleria tuber in a trade last year (at least I think it was kohleria) but it died on me.

I have some of those teensy little plastic dixie cups and also some real teensy little plastic pots. I think tomorrow I will try and see if I can gently divide them and pot them up in their own little pots. Do y'all think I should then stick each little pot inside a zip lok bag for awhile longer?

Kim ... you are so sweet to Scatter Seeds of Kindness in this garden! And, your strep seeds are just that, seeds of kindness. I have a little garden stake sign out in the backyard that says "Scatter seeds of happiness where ever you may go". Your seed gift made me think of my little sign.

Lin, the seedlings look great and they are certainly big enough now to have their own solo pots.........good luck and yes, you have some sinningias for sure!!!!!!!

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Hi Ladies,
Well I found the seeds I won in Dec. they are chirita tamiana... Any help with planting? Thanks for any help.
Hugs,
Susan

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Just plant like you would any other gessie seed.............use your same growing mix and spread lightly over with the seeds...........make sure your mix is moist when you use it for the seeds.

Kim, look what I just found that I was telling you about.............Bristol's Zapped has one fantasy bloom and one pale pink one on the same crown.............

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Ok.....Kimberly!

Here is one that has some variegated foliage and looks just like Iced Pink Flamingo but she couldn't be............look at the size of the seed pods.........

Lin,

This is why I guessed the ones in your pot on the left were sinningia.
These were some seedlings that Pier grew from the Gesneriad Society. She asked me if I would like to adopt them and brought me the "flat" and I separated them and put them in their own little pots. They have really taken off :)

They look ALOT like yours don't you think? Maybe our seeds came from the same mom? *lol*

WOW Gail! That is AMAZING!!
See why I love fantasies so much? You never know what you're going to get.........life's like a box of chocolates.......you never know what cha going to get *lol* That's like living with me..........you never know *lol*
What a PRETTY flower!

Here are my seedlings from Bristol's Party Box X Self that I started on 2/7. My plan is to leave them right in this salad tray until they bloom and then only keep one if it is a "gem" *lol*

WOW, it looks like (at least from Maine) it looks like those pods are brown and ready to harvest!
What a pretty plant!
I wonder who she is?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Kim.......just curious as to who told you to leave all these together until they bloom and then choose what you want. They have to get older to really see what the second and third blooms are in a cross or just selfed??????????

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

I just don't have space to put them all in their own cups and I have read where people leave 3 or 4 in solo cups together until they bloom so I figured I'd just leave them in their little salad tray until then *lol* I don't know.......maybe I will separate them at some point. I do have 5 solo cups with about 8 seedlings in it that I have ALREADY moved. I am telling you, I move seedlings around when they only have 2 leaves sometimes........Obsessive/Compulsive? Who ME? *lol*
The 6 Diastemma are still green and standing and those only had 2 leaves and were TINY TINY TINY.......This is why my poor plants scream........"LEAVE US ALONE!!!" *lol*

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

Gail! That fantasy plant is beautiful! WOW

As for the seed pods- please someone point them out to me- I can't seem to see them?! My eyes are still blurry but I think I discovered most of my problem was dry eye synd. which I didn't know I had until now??? Anyway- please point out the seed pod

And everyone's making me want to try my hand at Gessie seeds! I have my pack. for the Gessie Society somewhere around here. I got it around Valentine's Day when I was working so much and didn't have time to think about them! After sprinkling the seeds on the mix do we cover we more mix or leave them exposed? And where are you getting the 1oz cups Kim?! I do have some tiny pots somewhere that would probably work but those would probably be better.
Thanks!

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Gesneriad seed loses it's vitality over time. It's best to always store seed that you don't plan to use right away in the fridge.

But that's OK, I'm sure you will get good germination.

I'm really NOT that great at starting seed and am still learning as I go along Diane but you DON'T want to cover the seed.

This is a GREAT link on how to start gessie seeds:

http://www.gesneriad.org/page3.html

As far as the 1 oz. cups, I went to a party store and they are the little cups that people make Jello Shots with. They have the 1,2,3,4,5 oz. sizes. They were a little pricey but I re-use them so they last a long time :) Don't forget to put holes in them :)

Hope this helps and good luck to you!

Kim

They are very pretty flowers... Do I put the seed on heat mat and lights or just lights? Thanks for any help.
Susan

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

NO HEATING MAT for gessie seeds of any kind. Just a dome under the gro lights.

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

Thanks for the link. Do you use the peat pellets or didn't you say oyou make your own mix?
ANd where is the seed pod on the fantasy please? I intend to have one some day and want to know what I'm looking for LOL

(Zone 1)

Gail: That Strep Bristol's Zapped looks like it got zapped! I LOVE that plant ... the fantasy bloom is gorgeous but I love that pale pink bloom too!

Kim: Oh my goodness, those seedlings you have from the Gesneriad Society are Amazing! I would hope my little sprouts grow to look half as good as those beauties. Can't wait to see pic's of those when you get blooms!
Wow: Look at that tray full of Bristol's Party Boy x self ... there are tons of babies in there! And, you say you can leave them all in that same pan until they bloom? Don't Strep's have those gigantic huge leaves? Won't they be really croweded?

Ok ... educate me - what is a Diastemma? I'm assuming it's some sort of Gesneriad but I've never heard of it. Would love to see a photo of that one!

I agree about not covering gessie seed also. My Chirita tamiana and micro mini Sinningia's go to seed right in their little pots and new little plantlets sprout from just falling to the top of the soil.

Susan: You can just sow your seeds in a glass or plastic container with a lid, or in a container without a lid and then stick the container into a large zip lok bag for the moisture and humidity.

I don't have a clue what a heating mat looks like, I guess living in Florida I wouldn't ever need something like that.

(Zone 1)

Diane: The seed pods are on Gail's Pink Flamingo. Check it out ... see those long brown stringy sorta things?

Here is a picture from the gesneriad reference of Diastema vexans which is what Kim has grown. She sent me seeds at the same time and mine aren't coming up yet........bummer...............I may be stealing from Kim!

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Oh Girlfriend, you KNOW that IF I get them to live (that's a HUGE IF *lol*) that you are MORE than welcome to a couple :)
There are still a few seedlings that I left in the community pot as they didn't have 2 leaves yet *lol*
I have never been good with seeds/seedlings but I keep trying. SOMEDAY I WILL get this *lol*
I'm like the little engine that could............

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Lin, I certainly can't take credit for the sinningia seedlings. Pier grew them....I just adopted them *lol*
Yeah, I'm going to just sit back and wait and see what happens with the strep seedlings. I MAY pot up a few but there is no way I'm going to try to save them all. I will only try to save the biggest/fattest ones *lol* They are from a selfing so I don't have high hopes for many "gems" in the bunch that's for sure *lol*

Kim, I started seeds from Snowrose and they are gorgeous. remember that you have to look at all the blooms or you will miss a really good plant. If you are going to go to the trouble of planting a cross, then be patient and plant those babies up when they are about 2" tall. Sit back and watch all of them bloom. That is how hybridizers do it. They may grow 40 plants and only select one or none to propagate again.

I am going to show you how much difference in blooms grown from the same leaf. All I had were wedges from the same leaf.
Here is a Remembering John grown by leaf at the same time as the second picture.

The wedges from Remembering John were stuck on the same day and look at the difference in the first flush of blooms.

Honest engine this bloom was stuck from the same Dracula's Shadow ............and look at the next picture of Dracula's Shadow sitting next to this plant of the shelf.

Here is Dracula's Shadow from the same leaf. Look how big she is going to be and look how dark she is.

This strep was grown from the same seed as the next picture. This one has almost some salmon color to her.

Here is her sister seedling which has a white throat and is hot pink. This is why you must grow out all those babies.......I will help you if you want to send them when they are big enough to send.

I am just throwing Spin Art in for fun as she is raring to go. She was grown from a leaf and all three plants look alike exactly.

i like your photos, looks like your seed pods will be ready soon,

JIM

Williston, ND

Gail did you grow spin art from a leaf and if so did they all bloom true?
Thanks

JIM

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Hi Jim!
I was just posting pics on your site. Yes, I only had one big wedge and got 3 plants from her. Two are blooming and one is trying to get there.

If I knew the name of the strep with the pods I could get excited, but I cannot figure out where she came from unless I kept a leaf from Iced Pink Flamingo, but this plant doesn't have the variegation of the mother which I no longer have.

I need to compare an old photo of Iced Pink Flamingo and this plant......let me find an old pic of the mother I used to have. Here she is but I can't tell............

im sure its one of the iced series, its a nice looking plant gail

Gail..Love those streps.I am still bound and determined to temp you with something someday to get my mitts one of those Spin Arts : )

Gosh Kim..Look at all those baby streps! You are bound to have at least a couple to die fors in there..probably every one : )

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Cedarnest, you and Kim are the recipients of the other two Spin Arts and I will start some more next week.(I already had your names on them anyway)

I love the Iced steps, Jim, too! I just grew Iced Wine from leaf and one is blooming for the first time...........

I am so excited that Kim sent me Party Boy times self and they are germinating.........Now she is sending a cross of two fantasies seeds.........can't wait.

My expensive seeds of Dibley's hybrids from Thompson and Morgan (2 packs of them) haven't germinated and they should have by now.......but not giving up yet.

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

woo hoo..Thanks Gail.. I think I might have bought the same seeds you are talking about from Thompson and Morgan(windowsill and dragons magic streps) and I never had any luck getting them to germinate(either package)..even after waiting over 6 months!!..Really ticked me off...kinda expensive..thought for that money at least a few of them should have come up at least .....

Williston, ND

species take a while but the thompsons and morgans should start 7 to 10 days
did they dry out at all, they should be kept evenly moist, but im sure you know that

JIM

Williston, ND

cedarnest the british strep society or the gesinard seed fund are the best places for seed
or ebay, but you need to be a member of both clubs to get the seed

JIM

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

I did everything as directed Jim..No Luck..Wondering if I just received dud seeds..LOL..One pack I could understand but not both..lol..no I am sure its just something I did or didn't do but just can't figure out what.I can sow seeds straight from my own seed pods and in 2 weeks they are up...

edited to add: Thanks Jim,I have been meaning to join the gesneriad society but never seem to get around to it...One of these days tho I will finally do it : )

between you and me,I think they have junk seed
they keep it too warm and it wont sprout well
strep seeds need to be kept cool

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

I am beginning to believe you might be right about the Junk Seeds Jim ...never had such bad luck....
