What's Blooming in April II

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

We need a new thread for dial up friends.

Here is my Chirita Dream Time. She is too big and that is why I sent out all those leaves. All my chiritas are too big.

wrong pic........but this is Chrita Dream Time when she was in bloom

Dream Time won't even fit on my shelf anymore. Time to start all over with a leaf!

Gail, I LOVE your Dreamtime..........She's not too big at all!
I have a baby put aside for you but what an AWESOME mother plant!
I don't think that's rust my friend, I think it's sunburn or too much light.
I take mine off the stands as soon as they are in a 2 inch pot as they like low light and I need the space on the stand for other things. I have Kazu on a coffee table that gets light during the day but not any direct sun.
Do you think it could just be sunburn? That would be my guess.
PLEASE don't throw her out! She's BEAUTIFUL!!!

Guess what? I think you are right! I think they are getting too much light. I just moved all of them to the kitchen gro lights where they are not as strong (the gro lights).......just single lights. We will see what happens........I probably have a baby of her growing somewhere, Kim.

I will go take pictures of where I put some of the other chiritas in the kitchen.

I want to grow episicas here as they seem to like the warmth that comes from under the shelves where the gro lights are mounted.

I think the chiritas can just sit on the dining room table. I don't sit there anyway (LOL)

Gail my friend, that looks MUCH better. I think it was just too strong for them on the stand.
Your Chiritas are SO pretty my friend! WOW, they look so luminous up there on those shelves.
Looks like the perfect spot for them :)
How BEAUTIFUL!!

I LOVE your shelves Gail! I love the plants too but I'm talking about the actual shelves! Did you have them custom built?

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

You will get use to your glasses I have had them since I was in my 30's and was thrilled to get them... Ok this is a strep I believe and it is called Roulette Cherry and it is getting a bloom...

Susan

Kim ... I Thank You for that info regarding Chirita's not needing such intense light! I thought they HAD to be under the grow lights like AV's! My largest Aiko seems to have problems with the leaves like the plant Gail showed! I am taking the large ones from under the lights right now! They can stay on the top shelf of the stand that gets natural light from the east facing window!

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Thanks Kim for saying that about the Chiritas not needing that much light... makes room for other things...LOL Also at what time do you know to put them up in a bigger pot? most of mine are still in a solo cup... When the leaves on the streps or the Chiritas get real long do you cut them or do you just let them hang?
The color of the Silvia is purple and a yellow middle. I believe ... let me go check...brb Yup they it is purple and a yellow middle..
Susan

(Zone 1)

I googled Strep Sylvia ... Wow! She is a Beauty! http://www.hobbyodlaren.com/strepsyl.html

Lin,
Where theres is white mine is white and yellow.... Pretty...

OMG Susan...........I have coveted Roulette FOREVER. I got a TINY TINY leaf of Roulette and TRIED my hardest to grow it and pampered it and just couldn't get it to live.
I would LOVE LOVE LOVE a leaf of her someday when you have lots of leaves to share :)

Here are cultural conditions for Chirita:

CULTURAL REQUIREMENTS
Temperature: Cool to moderately warm growing - 55 to 80 degrees F or 12 to 25 degrees C.
Watering: Bottom or top, with the potting mixture generally allowed to dry out between waterings.
Light: Low to medium light.
Humidity: 40 to 50 percent.

GREAT plants.............I love them! Someday I hope to have them all *lol*

A few other notes to help with Chirita:

Fertilizer: Continually with a non-urea based formulation, e.g., Dyna Gro 7-9-5.
Soil: Neutral, heading upward to slightly alkaline;
pH=6-7; Basic Potting Mixture (BPM) with the addition of dolomitic lime is appropriate.
Propagation: Asexually using leaves, crowns and suckers or sexually (seed) through self or cross pollination. Hybrid plant material will only reproduce true using asexual propagation methods and techniques.

They are just the PERFECT plant :) Even when not in bloom, the foliage is SO stunning.

Also, remember......like a rhododendron, they put their buds on in the fall.......carry them over the winter and don't open them up until spring. So, they have buds for a LONG time before they actually bloom :)

Kim

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

AND, when the bottom leaves need to be removed and you end up with a "neck"..........do like you do for an AV........cut the bottom inch or so of roots, lightly scrape the "neck", put it back in it's pot and it will develop new roots where you scraped it :)

Kim

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Thanks for all the info... I just took mine and put them on a diffrent shelf for more room. I am rooting a leaf of the one for Kim (Dimmer) now and when it gets bigger I will share...

I am cooking dinner now but I will try to take a picture later but I have one called a silver surfer and I don't know if that is a strep or a Chirita... So maybe you all can help me again...
Susan

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Susan.........Silver Surfer is a Chirita :)

(Zone 1)

Now Kim - all that scientific stuff is waaay over my head! ^_^ I am going to print out what you wrote so I can have it to refer back to cause I will never ever remember it.

I think I saw a photo of some Chirita once that had a long neck and was grown sorta bonsai like. Yep ... just found it.
Isn't this gorgeous? http://www.gesneriads.ca/chirit60.htm

I have a C. linearifolia and I would love, love for it to grow like that photo! Mine was so tiny when I got it from Rob's last year and it sure hasn't grown very fast. It's been a year and maybe it's doubled in size but is still small ... no blooms yet either.

(Zone 1)

I had Chirita Silver Surfer but it's one I lost with a few other plants last fall.

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Yoooo Hooooo Lin, I have a FEW Silver Surfer babies (still in 1 oz cups)......once they get big enough for a 3 oz. I can send them with your others :) Should I put your name on one?

XO

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lin, I have lost all the names on mine except the newer ones(LOL). I was calling one Silver Surfer (you gave her to me) and someone at the show said it was a Kazu. I can't tell the difference in a lot of them.

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Gail, Your Stardust was Kazu........Silver Surfer has very variegated leaves. Stardust and Kazu look VERY close :)

(Zone 1)

Oh, Yes ... Please put my name on one Silver Surfer and one Dreamtime!

And, I can wait until late summer or end of summer. We are getting ready to have a huge mess around here with a new roof going on the end of the month and the pool and entire pool deck redone. So, I'm going to be trying to find space inside the house and out under the trees in the yard while all the work is being done!

You are soo sweet to share your babies my friend! Thank You!

(Zone 1)

Gail, let me go check my trade tracker and I can tell you which one I sent you. I remember it was one I got as a freebie and I already had one but I don't remember it being Kazu? Be right back.

(Zone 1)

Gail, it was Chirita 'Stardust' that I sent you!

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

This is why we all share leaves..........insurance :)
If someone loses a plant but has shared leaves.......someone always has a baby to replace the lost plant.
Don't you just LOVE it?
Lin, I will put your name on a Silver Surfer my friend..........:)
It will be a bit before they are ready but they will be nice sized :)
I'm SO thrilled as I'm going to have a nice box for you now :)
A few surprises too :)

XO

Williston, ND

Maybe Ive been keeping the chiritia I had too bright,I never really did good with them
I think I have akio,and 2 others,Betty is one I think,I like the ones with silver veining
so has anyone gotten new plants lately

JIM

(Zone 1)

I have C. 'Betty' ... slow growing and hasn't bloomed for me yet. I got it a little over a year ago and it was real tiny. I had another little one with nice variegated foliage, C. sinensis hasako that I got in trade about 1 1/2 years ago and it did not survive.

I haven't gotten any new plants in awhile. Trying to hold off until late summer, early fall ... LOL. We'll see how that goes. ^_^

ooops ... well, I did just make one trade recently and received wonderful plants. Not Gesneriad's but great plants!

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

YOOOO HOOOOO............Lin...........Do you mean Nakako?.........hmmmm............getting my pen ready again *lol*

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

All of the pictures and info is great... I have then a baby silver Chirita in a solo cup growing also... I will post a picture of my little one...LOL'
Hugs,
Susan

(Zone 1)

LOL Kim ... Someone mentioned Chirita Dreamtime which I don't have but I don't have Nakako either!

Susan: Is that Chirita Silver Surfer? Nope, I just enlarged the photo, doesn't look like Silver Surfer, so I answered my own question. Sorta looks like Chirita Crossroads to me with the shape of those leaves

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lin, both Kim and I are growing chirita leaves so it won't be long. I just put the mamas in my bathroom as Kim didn't think that they had rust on the end of the leaves. She thinks the light was too intense.

But, give us a little time. I have Nakako, Betty, Vertigo and several more that I can't get to grow big. I think they are being kept too wet, so I have moved all of them today and we will see what happens.

(Zone 1)

I had been wicking my Chirita's until a few months ago. They were staying way too wet so I took them off the wicking pots. They are doing much better with the exception of Hisako which is just about a goner.

I need to go look up Nakako and Vertigo!

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Lin,
It looks like it is going to be a silver like the big one... I may be wrong.. I am going to have to see when it gets bigger.
Susan

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I also have Kitaguni and lots of her tiny babies right now.

This is a hoot! I got all the chiritas that I had just put in the kitchen and now they are going to live in my bathroom where there is morning sun through block glass.
It is a good thing I don't have to share my bath or that person would have to move out of the way of plants.
