When to put out my flowers?

Brownwood, TX(Zone 8a)

Hello everyone, Im back from a long cool winter here in central Texas.

My question is,,,, is it to early to plant my new flowers that I just got in the ground and containers? It has been in the 70's -80's here plus the mesquites have bloomed.

Please let me know what everyone thinks...

Thanks
Dee

Hello Dee.
What kind of flowers did you get? Some are able to tolorate the colder weather better then others...

If you're past your last frost date then you should be OK, or if you're not to your last frost date yet there are some hardier plants that you could put out anyway, but tender stuff you ought to wait. Also, if your plants have been indoors, you'll need to acclimate them gradually to outdoor conditions (light and temperature) otherwise you may have problems with them.

Ayrshire Scotland, United Kingdom

I like Ecrane would think if your plants have been indoors, then each day you need to place them in their pots, outside for a few hours till they harden off a bit, after a few weeks of that and gradually having them out longer, you need to then be able to leave them out overnight if Frost is by, this allows the foliage and stems to harden up a bit, but for the first few nights they are out, be prepared to get them under cover if the temp gets too cool,
It's not just your plants that need to harden off, your soil needs to have warmed up too, from cold nights to hot sun wont help your new plants, they need warmer soil and moisture to have a good start for the beginning of there growing season, so dont rush it,
tender plants set out in cold damp soil is a sure remedy for disaster, and a few weeks could make all the difference to a good result or the death of your plants and hard work. patience gives a gardener best results and strong plants that will last all season. Good Luck. WeeNel.

Thank you all... I got snapdraggons, mexican heather, perewinkles (mispelled). Things such as that...

My elephant ears are coming up from the bulbs I left in the ground from last year.

Maybe I am safe

Paducah, KY

I'm not quite sure about snapdragons and mexican heather, but periwinkles are VERY tender (because they're rainforest plants), and I'd keep them safe until your last frost date has passed. They're not even selling periwinkles here in Kentucky, yet!
