What's happening in your neighborhood today...

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Victoria Harbour, ON

Made it home without the plants, Aveo just to small to accomodate so will have to get DS and his truck to go for a ride this weekend..lol..know just the place for them...have you ever heard of iceberg lilacs?

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

At least these BIG KIDS of ours are good for truckin stuff :-)

No can't say as I have heard of an Iceberg Lilac .. I had Iceberg Lettuce with supper though :-)
Is it purdy and fragrant ?

Hittin the pit soon .. hospice shift tomorrow .. not early though ...

~M~

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 3b)

Iceburg lilac? hmmmm never heard of it. What do the leaves look like? Are the blooms pale?
I'll bet the heather is beeee - A - U - tiful!
I wish I could grow heather in this climate........ siiiiiiiigh I have some South African heather, but it says you have to bring it in before the freeze.......

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

It must be spring...I bought a bunch of lily bulbs today. I'll pot them up and leave them in the basement until I can move my potted alpines out of the coldframe and move the lilies in....hopefully in a couple of weeks. I also got some Sparaxis...anyone ever grow them? It will be my first time.

My first snowdrop opened today (it was literally blooming under the snow). My heaths continue to colour up (sorry to inflict pain Tallulah)...they could be opened nicely by the weekend if the weather holds.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 3b)

hahahahaha Todd - n/p. One of these days I'm gonna have to see the heather in it's native Scotland (I'm of Scottish heritage, after all.............
My daughter's been to Scotland and she says it's Beeeeeeeeeeee - A- U-tiful! - especially the green grass where it's so humid that the grass is greener than N America's..........

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

WEll .. it remained mild overnight .. and the melt continues .. went to feed the deer .. was like walking in porridge !!!

Yet again .. no blooms .. just grasses .. and, of course, DANDILIONS trying to pop up !!!

Scotland IS beautiful .. not as beautiful as Ireland (I was born in Belfast .. so I'm biased) have tried to grow Heather here in Zone 3a Susan .. with NO success .. Lavender as well ... seeing it 'over the Pond' simply growing hither and yon in the WORST growing conditions is a brain rattler!!!

Read this this morning online .....THE GARDENER‘S PRAYER

The kiss of the sun for pardon,
The song of the birds for mirth.
You are nearer God‘s heart
in a garden
Than anywhere else on earth.

Probably you've all seen it .. I hadn't .. am wondering if 'cawing Crows' can stand in for SINGING birds :-)

I'm off and runnin .. well ... squishing !!!

Enjoy your day

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I know it is spring because I took the flannel sheets off my bed this week!

Victoria Harbour, ON

Marilynne you are a doll...I am in a 'garden art' swap and made something to send but wanted to do a sign to include as well...I'll include the Gardeners Poem...tks..

My SIL called at 5:45 this morning and said she wanted to leave for work at 6:30..so I was on 'high' speed, needed to feed the animals, do my hair and drive 10 minutes to pick her up..got to work at 7:50 well that's a bit early for me seeing I don't start till 9:00 so went to the super Walmart store, browsed in the greenhouse (trying to find elephant ear bulbs before everyone buys them up) lol but no go, looked at the magazine rack, I'm addicted to magazines..did manage to find one with 108 ideas for creating your outdoor paradis by Best Backyard projects..so now I'm off to see what their 'weekend outdoor projects' look like and is there one that will be a MUST for me to do...

It's sunny here today and high temps..just the kind of day you'd love to be home working outdoors, but it's not to be...perhaps on the weekend..not only do I have to work till 4:45 and then 1 1/2 hr. drive home but I get about 20 minutes before everyone comes painting..tonight at least 4 of them want to do 'floormats' so we'll design their project and hopefully by 9:30 they will all be gone..all 8 of them...might try to cancel painting this summer during July and August..let's hope they agree...

Will be back to gab and I'll get to tell you all about the projects...maybe one will tempt you....

The iceberg lilac tree - I bought a few last year, forgot where I purchased them, perhaps they are meant for colder weather..wanted a few more so thought maybe someone knew of them...but it's okay I'm sure I'll run across them again..

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Betty YW re the Gardeners Prayer .. it's sure nice ..

We were having such a lovely day .. sunny and mild .. even took a patient out for a little stroll .. the Russian Olive trees planted near the hospital are sure in need of a pruning .. but .. they are a PRICKLY bunch !!
Met my patients hubby and her doggy (Cocker Sp) on the way back inside .. he had brought her a wonderful bouquet of Daffodils and tulips (store bought) .. brightened up her room immensley !!
Got home .. and POOF .. the sun is now gone and it looks as though it could rain :-( Ahhh well .. it'll wash the 'grunge away'

OOOoooooooooo .. projects ... sounds tempting .. one of the nurses I work with has started her 'rock painting' again .. she does a wonderful job .. paints dogs and cats / flowers on flatter rocks ... another nurse is a very accomplished Water Colourist .. beautiful work .. :-)

Found a site replete with Lilac pics .. but alas .. no Iceberg ... here's the link ... I have picked out about 7 I would like LoL

Take good care

Love the Asessippi, vibrant colors for sure..if only it would flower for a longer amount of time..I've painted rocks as well..most of what I teach is trompe l'oeil..I work in many different mediums..love painting/woodworking (more tools than most men can ever hope to have) lol and stained glass..keeps me busy..of course gardening has to be amongst the most loved...

Still sunny here, first time I've been to lunch since last fall not wearing a coat..hear them calling for rain tomorrow and perhaps Friday but high temps..that's ok..as long as we get sunshine for the weekend..

Thanks for the site..nice of you to go through the trouble of googling it..ah..just another hour and we're home..

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

Well it was sunny and 10 C today...suppose to be warmer in the next few days. When I got home, this is what I found!

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

Lots of Crocus chrysanthus coming along...not sure how the purple one slipped in there!

and the double snowdrops wasted no time either!

Nice Todd! See, you don't have to wait until June for spring to come after all. LOL.

I am so envious Todd .. the pics are marvelous :-)

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 3b)

MarilynS - I'm growing Lavender here....... maybe it's shady & sheltered enuff?? It isn't all that big - just started it last year - but I grew it in Winnipeg, and it did just fine. I had it in my fr yard, facing north & babied the Heck outta it. I cut off the bottom of a sturdy plastic pot and plunged it into the soil around it so it looked like I'd just planted the whole pot lol Too bad I had to leave it when we moved........

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Great pics, Todd. We had similar weather today and many of my crocuses are also blooming with others ready to start coming. I like the purple one in the midst of the yellow ones. Squirrels?

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Todd you always inspire me. I shall tell you when we have great weather and you will have it 3 days later. Your crocus are the best! As well as your JMs and everything else in your garden. I so enjoy your photos.
This is just one of mine up in Angoon AK.

Thumbnail by Soferdig
St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

Great scenery!

We don't have squirrels, at least not the grey ones. I expect the purple crocus self-seeded...they are all over my lawn and I never planted any there!

Another clear day...suppose to hit 13 C. Of course, with anything good in Newfoundland, comes a price.....the wind is gusting to 60 Km! Maybe the warm air blowing into the snow will melt it faster!

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Another beautious day here in Thunder Bay .. and .. NO WIND today !!!! Seems it went east (sorry Todd) ...
The property has dried out so much simply BECAUSE of the wind ..

I see some greenery appearing at the base of my Mums and Rudbeckia ..

Be spending the day outside fer sure !!!!

Susan .. I SO love Lavender .. I got 3 'twiglettes' from the plant I planted .. brought them in and put them in my 'personals drawer' .. shoulds put them in a bag .. they dried out and it was quite the lil mess !!
Mine faced east .. but I do believe I planted it in crummy soil with poor drainage .. perhaps I'll give it another go this year .

Enjoy your day everyone :-)

~M~

PS Soferdig ... WONDERFUL pic in Alaska !!!! I'd be looking for a MOOSE :-)

Victoria Harbour, ON

Loved the photo's as well...calling for 20C today and 23C tomorrow - oh happy days..although I had to teach a class last night and got home at 6:30, I managed to rake yet another bed, so I'm gaining ground..

My lavender plants are also in poor soil, sunniest location in my gardens..I'm just not sure, so will have to visit the lavender threads to see if I should be cutting them down ? They still send off such an aroma...

I so envy those of you who are able to work outside today..I've a Dr's appt tomorrow at 10:10 so hopefully I can enjoy the afternoon..so many plans floating around in my thoughts that I have to get active and DO THEM!

I'm sitting here in the office, looking out the window, glancing from time to time to the Sears -McConnell seed catalogue, dreaming of the beautiful gardens shown in the backyard living books so that should entertain me for the better part of the day..lol

Drop in from time to time so I can see what you are up to in your gardens...always need some inovative ideas...

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Hiya ..

So far I have 2 loads of laundry hung and blowing gently on the clothesline soakin up the rays .. have washed my car and had 3 or perhaps 4 raucous encounters with THE most RUDE Red Squirrel on the continent !!! He/she will NOT stay out of one of the birdfeeders .. I have now taken wire and hung it lower (the feeder) .. I'll fer sure get BONKED when out walking Lilly .. but just MAYBE it'll deter the little rascal !!!

Am planning on 'sucking it up' and am going to give a go to removing what is left of the deer carcass on the west lawn .. NOT looking foward to THAT one bit .. but DH is away .. and he inadvertently 'forgot' to do it before he left (tongue in cheek here)

SOooooooooooo .. out I go again .. maybe I can find something to divert my attention from the above task for a bit ..

Cheers

~M~

PS Betty .. those books are ADDICTING to the MAX !!!!! :-) now .. how would I know that ..

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Don't get too comfortable for having warm weather. We got cold after 3 days of warm air and it has continued sunny and cold. High today is going to be 4to 9C. Snow flurries. It is hard after all the warm we had and you are having. Hope spring stays in the Eastern Provinces. I sure miss thunder bay. I spent a lot of time up there when I lived in Michigan.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Another nice day here but snow predicted for the weekend. Must be a fair amount coming because Sunday was scheduled for Scoopy Doo day at the off leash parks ( city wide poop clean up) and it has already been cancelled! Snow is the only weather that interferes with this particular activity! Rescheduled for a week Sunday.

Just found this little Hepatica blooming it was a new one last year so still very small.

Just went out for lunch - without a jacket or sweater! Soft breeze..3 more hours and homeward bound...I took tomorrow off for a doctor's appt. at 10:10..let's hope he's on time so I can enjoy he day..calling for 23...if you have to go to the doctors, why not pick an early Friday a.m. appt. lol

Scooby Doo Day..are only the individuals that walk their dogs put in time or is it the general public?

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

I'm still chucklin at the 'Scoopy Poo' day .. but I guess it's something that's needed .. not everyone is vigilant re bending and bagging as some are ...

Soferdig .. cool you have been to TBay .. met many Americans at our camp/cottage at Northern Lights Lake over the years. In fact .. DH is visiting a bud he has kept in close touch with after making his acquaintence many years ago .. this fella lives in Wisconsin .. calls himself a 'Swampy' .. always loved coming up to the BIG lakes up this way .. misses the Walleye (Pickeral) ..

Our sun went for a vaction behind the clouds a bit ago .. I think I had best get my clothes OFF the line .. Ummmmmmm the dog was the PERFECT diversion for avoiding 'carion clean up" !!

Friday Doc's appts are absolutely the BEST !!! :-)

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Scoopy Doo Day is organized once a year at the larger off leash parks. Volunteers set up a table with supplies - baggies, gloves, hand cleaner, treats etc and the city puts in special dumpsters. They used to weigh the amount the first few years! We just ask everybody walking in the park to take a bag and do a bit of clean up. Most people are pretty good about helping and we have toys and neck scarves to hand out

Victoria Harbour, ON

Sounds as though it's well planned and could be a lot of fun..nice way to meet others using the park...

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Ah yes Pickeral the proper way to say Walleye. Perch, Northern Pike and Walleye are the best white fish. Well except for Black Cod. It outshines all white fish. Yes I am heading around the north end of Superior not this but the next summer in my Old Town Canoe. I will be entering the Lake at Grand Portage and heading your way. What is the calmest month to sail a canoe on the north end of Superior? I am thinking Aug early.

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Well Soferdig .. Lake Superior is a mighty big lake .. you could push off shore at 9am in sun and calm .. and it can turn to a churning bucket of doo doo in an hour ..
August sounds as though it'd be a good month .. as July can get not only hot and humid .. but we get some BANG ON Thunder Storms too.

The GIANT awaits you :-)

~M~

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

Todd, nice flowers. You have more blooms then I do. At the corner of the house, I have some nice yellow flowers, I believe it's called Dandelion, among a few purple crocus. Similar to your 2nd picture......... At least it's blooms.

Nice , sunny, warm, cozy day today. 20C!!! snow is melting fast. Looks like the Ice on the river, is about to break though, will more then likely cause flooding. They've given the warning on the news tonight.

Some sign of Spring

I am quite aware of the potential weather changes living on Lake Michigan as a child. It shall be my most dangerous leg of the voyager route. But I feel it will be the most beautiful and lonely stretch of great lakes.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

o soferdig you don't want to eat pike from cold lakes up here. We call them "slew sharks" and we reel in rather than catch them cuz they bite through your line (and maybe you) and foul up your gear and slime your boat; basicly they are a pain. They also are really boney and taste yukky if big which they are up here. HOWEVER they look really cool with the teeth thing. I had a few pics taken of 20-30 pounders from Great Slave Lake before I threw them back just cuz they look almost sharkish when they're big. Pickeral on the other hand are manna drooooooooooooool. Please share on all pickarel fishing adventures please !

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

AND YOU WILLL TAKE HUMAN COMPANION RIGHT???

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

no no dahlia, pike or jackfish as we used to call them from very cold lakes are magnificient. I agree they are boney but the effort is worth it.

quenelles of pike with wild mushrooms and baby shrimp in a fish veloute sauce yum, yum

just don't eat em if the lake is shallow or warm

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

It was nearly summer today in the nation's capital. Supposed to have been 21 C. Went out to a concert after my handbell practice and wore just a sweater over a T-shirt. Had a jacket in the car, but didn't need it.

Many crocuses blooming. Took some pics, but haven't had a chance to download them. Still have some snow, but it's going quickly.

Ann

PS, MarilynneS I'm jealous about the clothesline. We take mine in for the winter and the snow in the back yard is still a couple feet deep where it fits into the ground.

Yes, I too think Pike are delicious. We use metal leaders to keep them from chewing through the line but they are great sport to catch land and eat. Lots of bones but who cares. Real Men can eat them raw. LOL
No Lynn I am not taking anyone on the Lake Superior leg, too dangerous. So I will do it alone. I am planning on long acting insulin only so I don't have any insulin crashes without notice. Been working on how best to live through each leg of the paddle without diabetic crash. I think filtering the water will be the first and best step. I am having problems with my parents again right now but I think June they will be OK.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

soferdig that doesn't safe AT ALL for you :((( ok maybe I was so spoiled on fresh lake trout and pickeral that I never learned to appreciate the slew sharks. I do agree that they are the best for the fishing part no hands down.

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

Looks like nasty weather heading towards Calgary..super cold temps will likely do serious damage to trees and shrubs who are starting to bud. Fancy and Dahlia, protect what you can!

Another sunny day today.suppose to hit 12 C, which is good for us! Problem is, tomorrow is freezing rain! Lousy for Sunday too. Amazing that since the new year we always have crappy weekend weather. So it looks like one more day of thawing then a hiatus until early next week. My snow might be gone by May at this rate.

I think I'll hang my laundry outside today too! I don't care what the laundry detergents advertise, nothing smells as nice as clothes hung outdoors!
