Coffee woes

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

I know I am not the only person out there that sometimes gets frustrated with the coffee maker in the morning. (esp when you haven't had that first cup)

We battled with a couple of very nice pricey coffee makers that you could not trust to make coffee without running hot coffee all over the counter and into the drawers and making a total mess.

I have now found a coffee maker that I can have on the counter without having a jelly roll pan underneath, just in case. So what is my issue?

Well, sometimes the filter (the funnel type is used in this coffee maker) folds over or something and some coffee grounds get into the caraffe. Because I am the one that gets that last cup, I am the one who gets the grounds in my second cup of coffee. Usually it is just a few, not too bad.

This doesn't happen very often, but this morning, I took a big gulp of the last of the coffee, only to spit it out. UGH.
I had to use floss to get the grounds out of my teeth.

So, instead of inventing a filter that you can seal after loading with your favorite coffee, that would take too long.
I put coffee into the filter and sewed it shut, with the sewing machine. HA!

We make a blend of different coffees, so pre-bought coffee packs are out. Also not everyone likes the same amount of coffee in a filter.

So...does this work? Stay tuned to tomarrow. I will let you know. (can't wait to see the hubby's face when he goes to make the coffee and see's the prepacks)

ROTFLOL That happens to us, too! Please let us know how that works.

That does happen now and then, and it sure is irritating. At first the Melitta filters had a tendency to break open, then we figured out folding the crinkled side and bottom edges over made them stronger and fit better. The new coffee maker uses basket style filters and it isn't so much a problem. Sewing filters closed! what a cool idea. How did DH react ?

Don't know yet. I will keep it a secret until he goes to load up the coffee maker tonight (we set it to auto brew) He is going to laugh.

I predict the first thing he will say is "had some coffee grounds in that last cup this morning, huh?"

He knows me, when I get angry, I need to do something about it.

One coffee pot that would not make a cup of coffee and would only overflow (3 times in a row, while camping) ended up in the middle of the campfire.
I spent quite a while fuitilly trying to repair the unit. I calmly walked out and dropped it in the fire and went back in and made cowboy coffee.

Not proud of my reaction, but it sure made me feel better.

Dropped it in the fire ? What else could be expected for a malevolent cantankerous coffeepot, 'tis only justice.

Thanks, makes me feel better. I try not to let things ruffle me, and seeing the thing in the middle of the fire quashed any rising ire. It did not, of course, burn well. But it was quite satisfying .

The only other time this happened to me was a smoke alarm that kept screaming, for no reason, at 2am and would not stop. Not after unhooking, not after taking the battery out, (well it just used the capacitor to beep then, but still annoying)
DH kept fiddling with it. I just calmly asked for it, walked to the door and threw it into the snowbank, where it could be fiddled with at a normal non-sleep daytime hour. Then went back to bed.
Hubby still talks about that one.

I sure hope this works. I wondered about the water going onto the filter instead of directly onto the coffee. Will it be weaker?

I have also had the other type of filter flop over and get grounds into the works. But of the two, this filter is by far easier to modify.

having the filter closed shouldn't be a problem. They are makers available that have the coffee come that way. One I'm looking at has small restaurant-creamer sized cups that you just put in a slot and add water. Twenty seconds and you have coffee. Single cup servings, though.

Never saw that before. Neat.

Well, it was a success. Coffee turned out great, course I am not to the bottom yet, but I don't think those grounds can get out.

I was wrong, DH said "Whats this? Did someone have too much time on their hands today?" (no just coffee grounds in my teeth)

Looks like I will be making more of these!

(Zone 7a)

Good job! LOL Glad it worked and that hubby has a sense of humor!

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Good thing I have a sense of humor!

(Zone 7a)

ROTFLOL Yes.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

We laugh a lot, that is why we get along so well.
(and can tease each other)

(Zone 7a)

DH and I are like that. We NEVER fight. We made a commitment to each other before we got married that fights would not be part of the marriage. Wer laugh every day and have a good time wherever we go, even if it's just to the couch to watch TV.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Thats great. It is hard to find someone that meshes so well.

Does your DH know to get out of your way if you are holding a coffee pot and he is in the line of you and the campfire?
(mine did, and never said a word)

(Zone 7a)

Yup. He knows to stay well away! LOL He knows me better than I do sometimes.

Well I cheat. I got a new commercial coffee maker from a seven eleven warehouse that they didn't want. It hooks up to a water line like a frig, has the hot water dispenser, brews 10 cups of coffee in about a minute and a half, never gets grounds in the coffee, and I live in heaven.

I shoot at people who even get close to it with envy in their eyes! :)

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Lol, I will try to control myself.
Although this proves that I am not alone in my quest for coffee without the hassle.

ROTFLOL NOT the only one!!!
