My grandmother has a beautiful houseplant, but neither one of us know what it is. It has medium-sized leaves, seems to want to climb, and gets small white flowers. The flowers are white, star shaped, and only last about a day before dropping off. They smell a bit like lilac, (quite fragrant, actually, for their size.) The leaves are a dark green, you can hardly see the veins, and the stem on the older growth is woody. Sorry I don't have a picture. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Houseplant Identification.
I would guess maybe some sort of Hoya, but without a picture it's hard to say.
Sounds like Hoya, except Hoya flowers hang on for a very long time. I'm wondering if it could be a jasmine of some kind.
Tina: Click on some of these photo's for Jasmine and see if any resemble your grandmother's plant: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/53785/
This is just one of many hoya's, click on some of these photo's and see if the flowers look anything like this plant: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/53934/
Thanks for your help guys. It's definatly not the hoya. It could possibly be the jasmine, the flowers look right, except they aren't a "trumpet" like most of the pictures of the jasmine are. Grandma says the flowers turn purple before they drop off the next day, but all the blooms I saw on the plant were white. (Could be gramma is getting old! lol)
If it wants to climb, look under the Jasmine type as they also have white star shaped flowers, I have to grow these types indoors here but in warmer climates they are grown outside, the Jasmine also has woody stems. I it is that plant, then buy a support to allow it to scramble up it and you will get more flowers perhaps not this year, but next year, also give it a feed for indoor plants, try one for tomato or one that has a seaweed mix and it comes in Liquid form, you should also re pot them each year way after flowering,, hope this is another bit of help for you.
