Soil Admendments

Lees Summit, MO

Does anyone have any suggestions on using Cotton Burr Mulch or Sphagnum Peat Moss to amend clay soil prior to planting a prennial flower bed?

Any good amendments will work including peat moss, compost, builder's sand (it's much coarser) leaves, grass clippings anything that will aerate the ground.

Here in the Carolinas we know that clay + sand + heat = bricks :) I'd go for organic matter like leaf or mushroom compost, cow manure or pine bark soil conditioner if it's available to you.

yes.... and then throw in a bunch of earthworms ...... bought two tubs full of night crwalers as if I was going fishing .. those were some LUCKY worms !!

Normally, I'd agree with plantfreak, but have friends that live in MO and they do use builder's sand with other amendments with great success. Builder's is much, much coarser almost pebbly type sand, so it helps aerate the soil and allows pockets of air to remain in the clay.

cotton burr mulch is one, if not the favorite mulch i use. i don't use cedar or cypress mulch anymore.

Sand is also fine if you have organic material in the soil, so you can't go wrong if you add some good organic amendments along with the sand.
