what should i add to my soil

Lockhart, TX

Im about to lay some sod tomorrow, not alot, and had a question about nutrients in the soil... I brought in several yards of dirt for a part of my back yard, and it has absolutely no nutrional value at all.. the guy told me its just a sandy loam that will grow grass nicely, but it needs some nutrients added...

I know i can go get my soil tested, however i already no its at 0% .. So what i can i spray on it or sprinkle on it that will fertilize, with a weed killer, and give me the nutrients i need so my sod will grow nicely..

I brought a part of my backyard level to the rest of it and i'd like to grow in some sod now...

Thanx..

I use corn gluten. It is organic, gets rid of annual weeds and adds nutrients. You can top dress with it 2 or 3 times a year. Look it up on the Internet to see when it should be added in your area. I spread it right over the perennial beds and grass. Don't spread it if you have just put in seeds. It works and mother nature will thank you for not putting any poisons on her.

You need to do this ground work before your sod arrives or your sod will sit at the side and dry out while you get the ground ready for it, I would add some bags of store bought compost to help with moisture retention, then rake this into the soil you had delivered, then when you level that out, scatter by the directions on the packet, a good quality general fertiliser for gras/plants so that when the sod arrives and you start to lay this, everything is ready so you can concentrate on just laying the sod, keep a hose pipe to hand as you lay so you can soak the soil as you lay, most folks make the mistake of laying the sod on dirt that is bone dry and dont realise the sod is also a living plant, if the weather is hot, I would lay the sod in the evening when the sun has cooled off a bit, you will need to be generous with the water also after laying to make sure the sod roots dont dry out, they do fast, even though folks think they are out of the sun by being UNDER the green part of the sod, so have the soil really wet as you lay, as you lay the sod, walk on long boards so you dont crush the sod under foot. DONT feed or fertilise again for a month or so, if at all, you want the grass roots to go deep down for the nutrients and moisture, not be ready available on the surface, too much fertilisers can burn the roots and you dont notice this till it shows up yellow patches of grass, by then it's too late,
Good luck, hope you get it right and you enjoy a nice green lawn. WeeNel.
