I have recently been trying to revive a friends severely neglected house plants. I have aptly brought many plants back from the brink of death (most of which I thought were unkillable, but my friend has almost proven that theory wrong). My problem is that he has a philodendron that has been neglected, it needs a good trim and repotting, but it's one vine (i guess) that is about 3 feet long with no new growth showing and wilting leaves. The vine is very thick, and I would like to try and make new plants out of this. Aside from the obvious repotting.....HELP! This philodendron and I would be appreciative
Split Leaf Philodendron Problem
We call these Cheese plants, they are really easy to care for provided you give them the right conditions, so to start with, you have to re pot this plant before you do anything else to it, it also requires a support for it to be able to grow upright and get light into the plant, so for that you need either a good strong garden cane, OR, buy what is called a moss pole, this pole is a stout pole that has moss wired all around it, sometimes made of plastic to prevent the pole from rotting then tie the stem/s to the pole (not too tight so as to cut into the stem) this allows moisture from the moss to get to the stems as they send out what is called aerial roots, these roots eventually grow very long and then reach the soil for moisture, once you have done this and watered the new compost, wait a few weeks before you start to feed your plant, start with half dose liquid indoor plant food, you buy it at the garden centers, try one that has say seaweed in it as this will boost the colour of the foliage and also add plenty nutrients to the soil, after a few months feeding every couple of weeks half dose, you can then increase to full dose as on the instructions, dont go mad and think extra feed will do good, it wont, it could burn the roots
once you have the plant the way I said, you need to mist the foliage as well as the moss or the stem as these plants come from tropical jungles and need humidity to survive this also helps the plant to develop the large cut leaves we all like, immature leaves are just small heart shaped and dont have the holes in them, but the large leaves grow out like green cigars until they unfurl, dont try to unfurl them as they do this over a good few days, position your plant in good light, but NOT at a window where the strong sunlight will magnify and scorch the leaves causing them to either shrivel or get large brown patches that wont go away. IF you have parts of the plant dead looking, cut this off with a really sharp knife, a white sap will weep from the cut, just wipe this away with a tissue or cloth, this wound will soon heal over, you said some of the top plant stem is yellowing, cut this off as said, but dont use it for cuttings as it may be diseased, however, IF you have a cut off that is green and healthy looking, stick it into the compost and support as for the parent plant. dont have your plant sitting in a saucer of water for longer than an hour after watering or you will cause the fleshy roots to rot, you will see them as you re pot, cut these off but be careful of the nice healthy fleshy roots as these are easy broken, if you need a large pot, you can top dress the soil with decorative stones or gravel to help stop the soil splashing when you water it, to tell if it needs more water, stick your finger into the soil, if wet, no water, if it feels dry, water and drain away any left in the saucer after an hour. good luck.
