I need help with a bottle brush I planted 2 weeks ago

Belleview, FL

Please help.... I think it's dying. It is about 5 feet tall (I bought it from a garden show) I have it planted about 5 feet out from the West side of my house. (It gets about 10 hours of full sun) It seemed like it was doing fine. It didn't have any flowers blooming when I bought it 3 weeks ago (It had alot of buds) now It has at least 50 - 60 "brush" flowers on it. I went to water it today and noticed all the leaves are falling off the branches. (That wasn't happening the day before yesterday)Is this normal? I have been watering it every other day. Please help. I don't want it to die!!!!

Could just be transplant shock...especially if your days are getting warm, it could be getting stressed from the sun/heat. You could try rigging up a little shade for it to protect it from the sun during the hottest part of the day. And make sure you water it appropriately...not knowing how warm it is there or what kind of soil you have I can't guess whether every other day is too little, too much, or just right, but the thing to do is check regularly by sticking your finger down a couple inches into the soil and if it still feels wet then don't water, but if it feels dry then give it a good drink.

the last three days have been hot. That could be it. We've had very weird weather here in Florida this year. Last week we had a night that got down to 34 and it was in the 40's for about 3 nights after that. with highs in the mid to low 70's. Now we're back to normal with lows in the 50's and highs in the mid 80's. I'm just going to watch it and see what happens. People have them all over the place down here. They are very common and always in full sun. I'm going to start checking it twice a day. Thanks

in your type of heat, I am just home from a visit to Florida, it was the hottest I've known for this time of year, anyway, in your heat, when you plant a large/med shrub, I would be inclined to stick an upturned clear plastic juice container into the soil at planting, that way, when you water, you know the water is going down to the roots of the shrub and not running off the top of the soil, just cut the bottom off the container and stick it by the neck (narrow end) into the soil next to the roots, after you do that, add a thick mulch to keep the moisture in the soil longer than bare soil, another good idea at planting, is when you remove the plants from the pot they have been growing in for a long time, tease some of the roots out from the root ball so they get out and into the soil rather than growing in circles as in the pot. Good luck, WeeNel.

Thanks WeeneL, that's a great idea with the plastic jug. I've planted alot of shrubs in the last couple of weeks and that's a great way to make sure they're getting all the water!!!
