Morning Glories 2008 #02

South/Central, FL(Zone 9a)

Becky, I don't care what you call me, just call me. lol

I like how you put those rings in your garden. Hopefully, that will protect them some. : )
I have been digging up whole concrete blocks on the N. side of my house. I guess when they redid that side, after the hurricanes, the block guys decided to bury the old blocks, instead of tote them away. No telling how many are under ground. Grrr.....
~Lucy

I have a half dozen seedlings of Ipomoea albivenia coming along, they have big seed cotyledons.

Great pink color Soulja. I love it.

Joseph, can't wait to see the albivenia blooms. It had the dark colored
eye last yr, yes? If it's the one I recall, it was drop dead gorgeous.

Yes, that's the one, Jackie. The flowers that hopefully will be produced by these new plants ought to look like the ones we saw last summer, but who knows?

Shawna - Interesting bloom! Is it one or two blooms? What is the name of this MG vine? Lovely color and pattern.

Joseph - The albivenia reminds me of a hibiscus bloom! Very, very pretty! Does it have a fragrance. (Maybe I already asked that before.)

Here is today's bloom from my cross. I can see that the blue color may be starting to change to white. Same thing happened on my Yaguruma Blizzard last season.

gardenpom - Nice one! Love that shade of ocean blue!!!

Here is one that I don't know the name. I think the seeds were originally EmmaGrace's seeds. I've had them for a couple years, so I don't know for sure. They are container MG vines because they tend to form mounds instead of long vines. Interesting bloom on it. I think I planted several different varieties of this particular vine. You can see some of them have variegated leaves as well. I think the other colors are white and pink. This one has purple colored blooms.

Here's a close-up of the bloom so someone might possibly be able to ID it for me.

To my senses, flowers of Ipomoea albivenia have a fragrance quite similar to that of Brugmansia flowers. I could smell the flowers from 5 or so feet away!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Joseph - I love a vine with a fragrance! What's the typical growth on these vines? Are they perennials or annuals? If you are successful growing this vine, I'd be interested to get a couple of seeds from you. (Perhaps a trade.)

Louisville, KY

On closer inspection It looked like two separate flowers coming from one base. (what's the technical term for 'base'?) I put several plants in that big pot so I have no idea what it is other than a nice surprise.

Your cross still has a unique pattern, but I wish the blue would stay. I had another of that bizarre blue with the red that refuses to be photographed like it really is but I'll put it up anyway. I've never seen anything like it, but of course that's not sayin' much....

Becky I had one like that from Emma and it believe it was 'Kawaii' don't know about the spelling!!

GP I love this one http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=4778263 I have been trying for that blue on for a while and they keep coming out purple!!!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Well ... here's what we will do Shawna ... I'll send you some seeds of my cross and you send me some seeds of this one: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=4778910
and we'll see if we can't get the pale blue to stay in mine by cross pollinating these two vine blooms!! :-)

Louisville, KY

Like an arranged marriage,
may the seeds unite to perfect Becky's Atomic Love Child....
red, you may kiss your blue.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Shawna - LOL! I think it's a match made in Heaven! :-)

Ronnie - Thanks for the ID on my non-vining MG. It certainly looks like this one: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/133793/
And your submitted photos of blooms on PlantFiles are awesome!

Becky,

I grow my plant in a container and overwinter it indoors. In your geographic area you ought to be able to grow it outdoors.

Joesph - I am sure that you are right about that! Check your d-mail! Thanks again! :-)

Do you happen to know just how big those vines get? Are they vigorous growers?

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Joseph, It's absolutely stunning.

Thanks lilacdreams

Beautiful blooms everyone.

It is a caudex forming plant, Becky (thanks Jackie). It flowers it seems on new wood so I think it could grow quite large if you let it and it was happy where you planted it.

Louisville, KY

Hi folks. It's a grey morning but my ten ten's don't mind

I will repay the favor when I get seeds this season.
Thank you again,
Brigitte

Louisville, KY

I am overwhelmed with friends myself Brigitte! My little seeds I had for you pale in comparison with some folks generosity to me already! It is amazing what I'm learning and the seeds that are flying into my mailbox just because I asked!!! Girls from the city ain't used to getting somethin' fer nuthin' ya know. Hopefully I'll be on the trade list this year with some good stuff. I want to thank Karen & Becky & Jackie & Ronnie so much!

y'all are the best and I'm soaking all your seeds right now.

Louisville, KY

.... well not ALL of them ....

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Shawna - Your Hama no Fubuki looks stunning! All dressed up and ready to go dancing! :-)

Oh! I totally agree about our "Friendship Garden of MGs!" The vines I've grown so far have been from y'alls kindness and generosity! Completely changed my view about MGs! Who would have known that they would become my newest obsession! LOL! And y'all are my enablers! Thanks for feeding my MG addiction! LOL! And I love sharing my seeds with everyone too! Nice to see my babies gracing other folks gardens! :-)

I think you have a little schizophrenic Mg on yer hands there!
wow. Maybe your love child is a Brilliant Mind. Sure is cool.
is the blue just gone? looks like it might not be in the 1st pic.
But then the shape is totally different too... hmmm....

it's fun to see the maidens evolve.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Shawna - The pale blue is still there, but seems to be slowly fading out of the blooms. (Which I honestly expected to happen since that is what the father, Yaguruma Blizzard, blooms did! lol) I do not know about the genetics of Lady Laura, but was told by Emma that the blooms should've been blue. HA! Instead they were pink. Hence it is called Lady Laura (Pink Form). What cultivars created Lady Laura, I do not know. Yaguruma Blizzard was originally named "Rosita" Youjiro (I. nil X I. purpurea) though it was discussed on an old thread that "Rosita" doesn't really exist. Sooo ... the mystery continues ...

Louisville, KY

oooh. I am growing a "Rosita now". perhaps it is an illusion...

keep pluggin at it and keep posting shots. Maybe try one tomorrow with the flash off and then adjust the exposure/saturation on the settings to see if it gets truer color to what you see. I have one that may be like that that I can't figure out. It has a dusty blue "base coat" with pink/rose flecks and stripes and absolutely won't photograph. I'm thinking though like yours, maybe it's just the colors are actually so incongruous, not necessarily disharmonious, but just not natural for the human eye to absorb juxtaposed the way they are on these flowers. Especially with no neutral hues to ground it. like white.

but the morphing shape is a whole 'nother matter!

Louisville, KY

okay i think I got it this time.
I have no clue what this is.
I didn't label the pot and I put
a couple different things in there.
(shh don't tell Ron... i'll never get seeds...
