Blueberry plants in raised beds?

Todd, NC

I will be recieving ome blueberry plants from Nourse farms in May and was wondering if I can plant them in raised beds? I was planning on putting in a berry patch on our property all in raised beds. Black raspberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries and strawberries.
For the blueberries I plan on using bagged soil, What do I need to get? what blend should I look for, or what can I mix up myself?
We have VERY rocky soil here i the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Thanks!

Blueberries need acid soil, so usually a raised bed is the best way to do them in most locations.

You can look for bagged soil blended specifically for acid-loving plants, or you can use regular soil and add peat.

You could probably get more advice in the Fruits forum.

My soil is very similar to yours I imagine and I've been putting in a lot of blueberries. They definetly like the soil raised up some but you'll probably have to irrigate them in the summer.

As LTilton said, they like acid soil so if you buy bagged soil mix in something to acidify it. Cheaper than peat, you can use pine sawdust, chips or needles to mix in to acidify and lighten the soil for them.

And keep the mulch at least six inches deep. I knew someone that lived in a naturally acid soil area, and he just put a bale of straw inbetween each bush, and let that rot down. Not pretty but sure made great berries.

Seek and buy Fairfax strawberries, best on the planet!
