Please help a newbie!

River Falls, WI

I am very new at this, but am giving it my best shot. So many question, but this is my first. I purchased many seeds and all have come...but my strawberry bare roots have already arrived too and there is still snow on the ground. I put them all in a container with potting soil and put them in a basement 64 degrees cold and beside a little south side window to get a little light. They are starting to grow really well. My first question is I am noticing a little "white fuzzy stuff on the soil"...is this damping off? The next question is should I be fertilizing it or giving it more direct light...I can give it plenty of natural light or grow lights, both I have, but do not know how I should treat them until I can get them in the ground. At what point should the weather be before I put them in the beds I have made? Any help would be so greatly appreciated!

I don't know what the fuzzy white stuff is, but I think your strawberries can take all the light you can give them. They're pretty hardy little things. Since they're new, I'd wait until Spring to put them in the bed.

This is my first year with strawberries, tho, so I'm not an expert by any means. I put mine in a bed last Nov & they came thru the cold & freezing temps with flying colors - stayed green all winter. We're in Spring now, down here, and they're going gangbusters!

I suspect it's a bit of mold, I would probably back off on the watering and maybe spritz them with a bit of dilute hydrogen peroxide the next time you do need to water. And since it sounds like they're actively growing already, I'd get them under some lights right away.

Thanks for your suggestions. Yes, they are actively growing....I do not know if that is a good thing or a bad thing, but they are getting bigger every day with lots of green leaves. I actually put them on the porch in the sun today to get direct sunlight. I will now put them under the lights indoors. Two questions....do I spray the solution only on the soil or the plant/leaves too? Also, I have all my plants scruntched into one pot.....thinking I would just put them in one until transplant....now that they are actively growing, should I keep them there so they do not get so big, or transplant each one out in their own pot. Thanks again for the advice!!

You have a few more weeks until you can put them out, right? I'd put them in separate containers, otherwise you're doing to have to separate a mass of roots which could damage them.

You can put them in plastic/paper cups with a hole drilled in the bottom for drainage.
