need advice on redtwig transplant

Spokane, WA

Hi Everyone,
I'm trying to rearrange my yard. In the home we purchased, the only location I can find for a nice perennial bed is inhabited by some lovely Red Twig Dogwoods. I was thinking to move them to a sunny bed on the southeast side of my yard, but about five feet away, on the other side of the fence, is an Arbovitae hedge. I'm worried about the water competition and overwhelming root structures of the Arbovitae. I don't want to buy new shrubs. Love my red twigs, but want the opportunity to garden perrenials. I still plan to move the red twigs to that local, and hoping they will make it. I read in plant files that they love water and can even be bog plants! Can anyone give me advice on this? If I move them are they doomed? I feel stuck. I don't want to kill them. I so dislike Arbovitae. Maybe I just don't know enough about them, but seems like they put the kabash on any gardening around them within a ten foot radius or so!

The success rate of moving established plants often has more to do with how much root mass you can manage to save more so than anything else. Having said that, planting anything five feet from an established hedge of Arborvitae (I'm assuming one of the larger ones) could be a challenge. The last thing I would worry about though would be the red twig dogwoods being thirsty plants. If you water them by hand the first year while they're becoming established, they should settle in pretty well and be able to hold their own in no time. Our nursery has a 12 year old planting of them in full sun, on a berm, without irrigation and we're in heat zone 7! The leaves look a little ratty by the end of summer, but as a whole, they're doing great.

OK, so helpful! Thankyou! Once our ground thaws, I'll move them over.
