I have an ugly retaining wall built of railroad ties that's about 5' tall. I would very much like to cover this wall entirely or have something cascade down over it halfway. Does anyone know of any groundcover options that would cascade in that manner or would a vine such as the trumpet vine climb down a wall, instead of back into the flower bed at the top of the wall? I have a deck at the bottom of the wall and no place to plant anything there unless i use pots and im not fond of that idea due to having to water them and making the deck all dirty.
Thank you
Darrick
wall cover?
Hi Darrick,
You need to decide if you want it to be evergreen or if you want it to be perennial or what. Do you want a flowering vine? What zone are you in?
Here is the silverlace vine: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/57174/
Here are a couple of passionflowers that are hardy: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1189/

I have have a wall that lines one side of my back yard that looked so cold and bare. I put pieces of Virginia Creeper along the base of the wall and within 2 years it completely covered the wall and cascaded down the other side. It's fast growing, requires no care at all and looks lush and beautiful most of the year. Keep in mind that it loses it's leaves in winter, but it actually looks good then too.
The V. creeper also turns a vibrant red in the fall. Very pretty.
Perennial sweepea would cascade.
Hey thanks for the info everyone. I would like it to be a perennial, as far as flowers or evergreen either is fine. I live in zone 6. I'll look into some of the ideas you all have given me.
