Hello Plant 555,

When we lived in a condo, I did my plant gardening on the patio. I planted a white Easter lily and another lily that had a beautiful rose color. Both came back for several years and then they just kind of stop coming back except for small little plants that would not produce flowers. I figured it was because they were growing in pots.

Last year for the first time, I was able to plant several lilies in my own yard (big smile for the yard). A couple of days ago I saw plants coming up in several areas of my lily bed.
By the way, I never waited for my plants to die down. After the flowers died, I removed the flower and planted the lily in the ground (or pot when I didn't have a yard) and let the plant die down in it's new home.

Easter Lily is Lilium longiflorum. Their natural bloom time is mid-summer, but the ones they sell for Easter have been forced under glass to bloom for sale at this time of year.

They can live all year in the ground here, but I don't know about your particular zone.

Supposedly they can infect other species of lilies with a virus if planted together, so you may want to plant them in an area by themselves, away from other more desirable species.

My parents used to save the ones from church and they would bloom in July and August, but never at Easter !

Very interesting. I never heard of a virus being spread to other lilies by an Easter Lily. I wonder if that's why my lilies never lasted more than a few years while I had them in a pot on the patio? JasperDale, do you know what the symptoms of the virus would be? You're right about them not blooming again for Easter. Mine always bloomed in the summer months.

From what I remember about it from school, it is called Easter Lily Symptomless Virus. It's inherent to Easter lilies and causes lack of vigor, weakened stems, and other maladies in other species of Lilies., when they are planted together.

Try doing a google search for "Easter Lily Virus"...I remember one from the University of Minnesota which explained it pretty well last year in their Yard and Garden section.

I'll see if I can find a link for it.
