Leggy Money Trees (Pachira Aquatica)

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

These two still had the name tags identifying them. The large one is starting to tilt over because the stems are so long and thin. Is anyone familiar with how to prune or fix this problem without damaging or ruining the "look" of them?

Are they getting enough light? That might be why they got sort of leggy and spindly. Either that or they were given too much high nitrogen fertilizer and grew really fast which can also create spindly growth. I don't have any of these so I hesitate to give you pruning advice, but once you figure out how to prune it properly, I'd get it in some brighter light and see if that helps.

This old house has 10' ceilings with 6 long tall windows getting full morning sun. The bottom half of the windows in that room have closed shudders, the top open. That may be the problem.

I moved them to this area a few weeks ago, and they get a few hours of full morning sun here. The little one now has new growth at the base.

Thanks! I will try the new location with brighter light for a little while longer and see what happens before I attempt to cut anything.

I can't remember the last time I fertilized these.

I have a few of these and when they get spindly (usually through the winter months) I just cut them back where I want them to start growing and put them outside in a somewhat shady area and before long they are lush and beautiful again. The cuttings are easy to root too, and they make cute little money trees. They are fairly tough and can take some direct sun, as long as they are protected from strong afternoon sun which can bleach them out. Great plants!
