Need plant with height for along a fence

Baton Rouge, LA(Zone 8b)

I'm looking for ideas for something I can plant along a fence in an area that is about 3 feet by 25 feet. The area runs along a wooden fence and is next to a pool (see attached picture). I would prefer something that stays green year around and is easy to maintain, but not something that takes over quickly or has aggressive roots like ginger b/c I wouldn't want the roots to eventually crack the concrete pool decking. I'm in south Louisiana so we have hot & humid summers and mild winters. Any ideas?

How much sun/shade does it get?

Huntington, AR

A few suggestions, though I don't know how much height you want...nerium(oleander), or euonymus. Not too familiar with growing conditions of New Orleans, but good luck...

Forgot to mention... the area is in full sun.

North Augusta, SC

Perhaps a group of climbing roses or ramblers would do the trick. They would love all that sun.

Can you recommend a specific climbing rose that is hardy? What is a rambler?

This is a nice one...

camsi,
Lady Banks rose is evergreen down here and doesn't have thorns. It comes in yellow or white (I have a yellow one and just love it). It can be pruned to maintain whatever size you need. I prune mine every year late in the winter. Since yours will be by a pool, you might like not having thorns to deal with.

Great! Thanks!!

I have a small caveat...Do you want flowers that bees will come to near the pool area?

Baton Rouge, LA(Zone 8b)

Yeah, probably wouldn't want too many bees close to the pool.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Do you want the plant and or bush to flower? With anything that flowers your more than likelly to have bees. I would suggest maybe a dwarf Crepe Myrtle. The best hot weather plants I have found unfortunatelly are highly poisionous. Like the Castor or the Oleander. Those probably wouldn't be good by a pool. But here in Jacksonville, Florida Zn 8b-9a The Oleander is planted all over the city. Even along the St. John's River. Maybe something like a
Dessert Rose. Or Even Banana trees. I have a ton of Banana trees and they do great during the summer. If they get wet they'll be happy. Or maybe dwarf fruit trees.

Crepe myrtle petals are hard to keep out of your skimmer...

Cannas would look good by your pool as well as Elephant Ears......

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

I agree with juliep about the elephant ears. I have the Giant ones. They die back in the winter time but come back every year. In my yard, the shadier it is the bigger they get. I had several that were 12 foot tall. They can be a bit invasive. If you would like some, I'd be more than happy to dig some up for you and send them to you. They do flower and have a musk like smell to them . At least the ones I have do. My husband and I have sat under ours while its rained and kept mostly us dry.

P.s. My Elephant Ears don't do so well in full sun. they may get 3 foot tall.

Louisville, KY

My elephant ears are in the shade too!! The leaves got to be 5 to 6 ft. long!! I have some that tolerate the sun. The gigantea will tolerate the sun. Pink China will tolerate sun. They are hardy here. They die off and come back, but if you live in warmer areas they will just keep growing and growing.... I wish I lived in warmer areas because right now my house is a jungle!!!! Happy Gardening!!!

They Elephant ears and Cannas don't shed, so they would be perfect around the pool. They make you feel nice and comfy. Mine are around the pool. Wonderful!!!
