I've had feeders up in the front and back yard for a couple of weeks now with no sightings. :( I guess the scouts that have been sighted in south central MO are not the ones that enjoyed my neighborhood last year. I DO however, have a few honeybees. I have lived and gardened here for 6 years and have never seen a honeybee, so I guess I can celebrate this sighting. The neighborhood gardens are showing salvia and petunias, so we should be good to go if any show up here.
Impatiently yours,

Ruby-throated Hummingbirds
Had my first hummer here today. So I put up all my feeders. hope tp have pics soon.
Finally...my first hummer!! It is so windy today though I hope it doesn't get blown north!!
It ate at all 4 ports on the feeder...it is the cutest little hummer I've ever seen...lol!! I've got three feeders out right now which I just cleaned and put fresh sugar water in yesterday so the timing was just right. Now I'll put out the rest of the feeders and see how many more will be attracted (yes..I am greedy)!
Haven't a clue how to get a pic but I guess I will have to learn!
YAY ROSE!!!!
YIPPEEE Rose!
Thank you Nanny and Mrs. Ed...I am heading for Lowe's right now to get some more flowers for them!! See...I do have a life!! LOL!
How is it that getting hummingbirds at the flowers and feeders you have NOW in your yard makes you convince yourself "I need to get MORE flowers and feeders in my yard"? I've never understood that. But I fall into that trap every summer. I can't fit one more salvia sprig in my hummingbird garden. I tell myself "they're ALREADY coming to my yard." But yet, there I go, off to buy another feeder or another bunch of plants.
Ahhhh the joys of birdwatching!
Hee Hee!!
Judy, how is it that we convince ourselves we need ANY plant???
I'm on a mission to improve my hummingbird shangri-la though!! Last year it was just RED that I planted. Now I'm getting to the serious nectar plants!!
BTW I saw my first butterfly today. I was very surprised.
Mrs. Ed... My hummingbird garden started with reds. Salvias, pentsemmon, bee balm..... but I noticed they loved the yellow honeysuckle, so I added more yellow... crocosmia, columbine (of all colors) then they liked blue so I added all sorts of salvia. I think they're on the take with the local nursery. They probably get a cut of the profits. Little buggers.
Rose, YAH. And I'm soooooo jealous. I moved from KC to Cincinnati area, so you're kind of in between my old and new home, just a bit south.
Height of frustration is that I'm going on 4th cleaning of my feeder with no hummers in sight. Course, I only have one feeder...might have to fix that this summer.
Really, what gets into us? I have to drag myself to shop for clothes but I'm constantly shopping for bird and garden stuff. Any excuse'll do. Found meal worms today, YIPPEEE.
I know...we are all just bird crazy! I got another hanging plant today at wal-box...only $10 and it is a very bright orange-red impatient. The blooms are almost 2 inches in diameter so I hope they all see them!! I would have bought another feeder but I already have enuf (good grief..did I just say that?)!! If I do get anymore it will be the flat saucers from WBU...they are just so easy to clean.
I had to move the bird feeders I had hanging on the front porch...poor Goldfinches don't know what's going on. They have tons of feeders though so don't feel sorry for the little piggies! I have one hummer feeder there now along with an oriole feeder and the new hanging plant.
I also have the same thing in the back yard outside my window. The other feeders are scattered so I can hopefully get some pics.
Coo..I would also rather shop for the birds rather than clothers. I usually wear green or camo so the birds won't see me when I'm trying to get pics. Yesterday was warm and I wore bright blue and scared all the birds! LOL!
Congratulations Rose and gldandrews!!!
When we start hanging red bandannas in our yard and get arrested for being in a gang, how are we going to explain it?
The Ruby Throat GANG.
mwahaha
You all been sipping the nectar!! LOL
I think all of us have our sugar to water ratio off just a tad, if we're being honest. That's the birders equivalent to "a few fries short of a Happy Meal."
According to the migration map, somebody spotted a hummer in the Baltimore
area 3/27; is must've frozen when the night temps dipped to 32. 75-80 degrees
the last couple days & not a hummer in sight here. I screamed when I saw 'em
in southern Canada on the map!
This threads getting a bit long I'll start a new one w/ a pic from last year.
Heres the link.
