I am ready to sow my cosmos and zinnias. Do I sow my seeds and then put down mulch?
Seeds then mulch?
I wouldn't put down mulch until after the seeds germinate and get big enough that you can mulch around them--one of the ways mulch helps keep weeds from sprouting is that it blocks light and makes it harder for them to germinate, and it'll do the same thing to your seeds. If you need to keep birds off, etc you might try a light covering of straw like they use on lawns when they're seeded, but I wouldn't use bark mulch until the seedlings are bigger.
Silly me I should have known this. I just spent 2 l/2 days getting bermuda out of flower beds and am hoping to keep them down as soon as I can. Thanks for your advice.
