Can I plant it in the ground?

Lake Charles, LA

Let me first say that I'm not a new gardener but need advise about this plant. I bought a moonlight philodendron pot plant and want to plant it in the ground. I've had a giant split leaf philodendron planted in the corner of my flower bed for four years and it loves my yard

I live in coastal Louisiana zone 9a and would welcome any feedback about this plant. We might get two nights a year where the temp is below freezing and I would cover this plant than. opinions welcome
thanks in advance

I'm sure that if you were careful not to allow the plant to stay unprotected when the temp. dipped close to the freezing point it will do fine. Is the split leaf in a protected area? I'm assuming it is or it wouldn't have made it four years now. I would make sure the moonlight phil. is kept in a protected area. Once it is established I think it will be OK. I sure do envy you living in zone 9. I have to haul a couple hundred plants in late October every year. I'm moving South when I'm too old to do it anymore!

Yes, the split is in a protected area and has grown abt. 5 feet tall. It has been through a couple of light freezes and always comes back up. I only bring two or three plants inside the house during the winter. My tropical plants are just pushed pack to the south side of the house and do O K .

If it can't take a little bit of cold than I don't want it. I might plant the moonlight philly in a big pot for the first year..

Thanks for the comment Susan

ss,
I'm not in quite as warm a climate as you but have kept a split leaf on my front (south facing) porch for the last three years all winter and it's done great. If you have a porch, you could probably get away with putting your moonlight philly on a porch for the winter. My split leaf has been knocked back by a few leaves but never died. It's too big to bring in now so it's on it's own out there.
