Companion plant for dwarf escallonia

Gladstone, OR

Last year I planted 10 dwarf escallonia along a low vinyl fence. They are still only about a foot tall, and I'm looking for something that can be planted with/between them to fill in the spaces. They're about 2 feet apart. Thanks for any input.

I'm not sure how wide they get, but assuming once they're grown there won't be much space between them, I'd get some pretty annuals and fill in with them for a year or two. Anything more permanent than that you'll have to rip out when the escallonias get to their mature size. Shrubs often tend to follow the rule "first year they sleep, second year they creep, third year they leap", so I would expect you'd see some growth this year, and then more next year (although since they're dwarf they may not grow very quickly compared to other sorts of plants)

Thank you for your response. I have a tendency to expect things too quickly, and have had to pull things out on more than one occasion (as you mentioned!).

I think the annuals are a fine idea, and I appreciate the reality check!

I'm the same way, I always plant things too close together, figuring I'll decide I don't like some of them and want to pull them out, the gophers will get some, winter frosts will get some, and summer heat will get a few and then the spacing will end up being perfect! Of course Murphy's law comes into play and the two plants that survive all the weather & gophers and my critique of their flowers always end up being crushed up next to each other!
