I have tried for several years to dig and overwinter bulbs. I've read up on it, and think I'm doing what they say. Last year, I let the bulbs dry for a day or two, then put them in dry peat moss in paper bags and put them in the basement. They were probably at about 60-65 degrees. This year I tried putting them in the wine cellar, which stays at around 50-55 degrees. This year, I had tuberous begonias, and my book said to leave as much earth on the roots as possible, so I've not actually seen the tubers - I just nestled the lumps of earth with the tubers inside on a bed of peat moss in an open box.
I brought out the begonias to start them, and the lumps of earth are feather weight, so I suspect that, like last year, my bulbs have dried out.
What am I doing wrong? I was tempted to moisten the peat moss this winter, but nothing I've read says to do that.
Need advice for overwintering bulbs
It sounds to me as if you are doing it right, so I don't know what's wrong. Hopefully, someone with more expertise will come along to help.
