Confess! Did you over-plant and crowd your garden last year?

When I was a kid and put more food on my plate than I could possibly eat my grandma used to say, "Your eyes are bigger than your stomach!" Now that I'm watching my portions, that's usually not true, but I think the syndrome has transferred over to my garden. When I started plunking in plants, I wanted my new garden to look fuller faster, so I planted them closer than recommended.

Quite a bit closer. *blush*

By September last year my Russian sage was crowding my rudbeckia and my rudbeckia was glaring down at my shasta daisies and I could hear them all saying, "Um, hey! A little room to grow here, please?"

What can I say--it's my first real garden. I was...enthusiastic. And this spring I can tell I'm going to have to muster some enthusiasm for moving plants around. Whoops!

So, am I alone here? Who else has "eyes bigger than their garden?" Who else is facing a crowding crisis?

I'm like that with canna for my canna bed .. i keep saying .. just one more won't hurt. The result is that they are escaping their confines. I'm sure I'll be diggin up strays this year .. I call it "herding canna".

LOL, "herding canna" that's funny, X!

I have done the same thing, planting too close and then I'm already moving some by the fall. My biggest fault is not realizing the size of some plants and they completely hide the other plants around them. I had an Indigo Blue Salvia eat a daylily.
