I have some squash and cukes that I want to plant but they are SO leggy. Can you plant them down a bit, like a tomato. Do you think you just plant it and let the stem lay on the ground and it will take care of itself. The leaves are nice and big and look healthy. Its just sooo long.
planting leggy seedlings.
Once they have gotten leggy, they will not be good strong plants. Also, you cannot plant them deep like tomatoes--this would make them rot. In your climate, I would just direct sow. Squash and cukes sprout so quickly you will have good healthy plants in no time.
I don't know about squash, but cucumbers will take root along the stem up to the first leaves. Just stick them deep in a few styrofoam cups, you don't have anything to lose trying.
My though exactly! However, next year you can evade this problem by starting to sow in april and putting the seedlings outside in may.
