Social Circle, GA(Zone 8a)

UH! No love mrs wrongie! Full pickup story....etc etc etc

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Didn't I email it, Jenks???

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ah Wrightie - only you!! LOL That's what you need now...and black and white pit...then you'll have triplets!!! How's our Mr. cuite patootie doin today?

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

He Slept Through the Night Without a Whimper!!! Such a big boy. His past times include chasing crispy brown leaves, chewing on bark, and making the Other Other Mom Lady pull acorns out of his mouth every time he goes outside. Oh, and chasing and pouncing on his ever so patient Little Big Brother, Boots the Cat...

I don't want to go back to work next week!!!

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Chantell, if you ever make it up to my neck of the woods (do you Fear the Turtle??? LOL) then please come by for a puppy visit!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I most definitely do *not* fear the turtle. ;-)

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

yeah, neither do I!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ok...I'll bite....what the heck is "the turtle?" Are we talking a real turtle? Some how I think not...LOL. For the record though...there really aren't any animals I'm afraid of...I'm a Rottie mom for goodness sake...(she says while giggling)

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Univ. of MD, Silly!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

I get it now....(DUH)...I have to go up there yearly...my son attends a baseball camp thingie every winter...fun, fun, fun

Northern, NJ(Zone 6b)

Hi wrightie,
Lovely pup, great sad eyes. I saw you were adding pine shavings over the wood chips. Just wanted to alert you to the possible health hazards of using pine shavings. Seems there is a substance, abietic acid, in pine shavings used primarily in bedding for small animals, that causes irritation to the liver and respiratory track of people and animals.
It isn't carcinogenic like cedar, more of an irritant.

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Semper! I'd imagine that since they are outside, and he's only on them for a couple minutes/day that he's at low risk, but I'll certainly look more into it. I'll talk to my breeders about it; they use them inside.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

LOL... DH & I both graduated from Duke, so not only do we not fear the turtle, we do not dignify the turtle with a capital "T"! Ha!

Ouch. WVU just sank a three point shot to tie the score with Duke... but Henderson made his second free throw... oh dear, they just got a basket and now they're a point ahead! This is going to be a hard fought game...

It sounds like Boots is being patient above and beyond the call of duty. He'll be repaid by having a buddy that no other cat in the neighborhood will want to mess with... Boots will rule! LOL

"Talk to the paw."

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

LOL

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

I am in LOVE!! Wrightie, he's a doll baby.......cat don't look tooooooo thrilled, but all dogs are trainable........LOL

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

You're a sucker for those Boston's, eh doccat? LOL

Speaking of trainable, the Z-man is doing very well in that dept. My biggest problem with him at this point is his tendency to try to eat all of the bark, sticks, rocks, dirt, acorns and horse poop that he can get his little face around. I am constantly pulling stuff out of his mouth when we are outside. I pretty much had to train him to walk on a lead so that I can keep him under a little bit of control and stop him from eating everything while we're outside.

(Sheryl) Gainesboro, TN(Zone 6b)

Well, I'm glad potty training is working for *someone*. Squeek is going outside a lot, but seems to think he should come IN to pee. Oh, and he'll poop once outside, then come in and do it twice more.

Grrr.

Oh, and his favorite poop site is, of course, my front flower bed.

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Puppy training is a full time job, isn't it?! I am seriously exhausted and haven't slept well since he got here. I'm looking forward to being passed the housebreaking phase!

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

The worst part here is (in addition to trespassing to pee in the dwarf garden, I know the veggie garden will be too tempting as well) the tendency to poop inside when rebelling if one of us goes off for any length of time - me overnight to my sis's, Nora for a few days or 10 days to visit cousins - at least one of them lets us know of their extreme displeasure in one specific spot......they now sleep in their crates for a few nights at the start of any trip, and we're all happy as clams :)

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Pagancat - I know this will sound gross but have you tried, when cleaning up urine indoors, using a rag (you'd eventually throw away) and setting it out doors where you'd like Squeek to go?

(Sheryl) Gainesboro, TN(Zone 6b)

Huh - no. I did pick up some of the poop (with a paper towel) and took it and him outdoors ... so that's *kinda* like what you're suggesting, Chantell. Have you tried that (or are you just trying to make me do something gross, lol!)?

I had read on the web that you're not supposed to let them see you clean it up inside, that somehow that would translate into a "present" that he would feel the need to continue to give. Oh joy! Brings new meaning to re-gifting....

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

pppffffttttt ... whatcha supposed to do, blind fold them before cleaning it up? :)

Imnsho, methinks that if one is vigilant about picking them up and carrying the pup outside as soon as they wake up from a nap, or shortly after a meal, then they're going to be successful for the most part. It's been going well with us so far (and did with our last pooch as well)

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

LOL....too funny....much as I like to tell tall tales...that particular trick has worked for me. Even now if we're going to need to go in the car and want to make sure our male dog pees (why he's such a priss is beyond me)...if we tell Amber (oldest Rott) to go...she will... plus she'll gladly mark any territory as hers...LOL. Soon as she does...we can walk Wolfie over to the area and he always lifts the ole leg...sadly that's another thing the girls had to show him...LOL Way too many Alpha females in my house...
We were posting at the same time, Wrightie...agree w/you 100%...

I hear ya on the Alpha Fems - I got a horse who I'm about to give testosterone shots to ... well, let me re-think that one. Anywho...

Alwrighty, I'll give the rag a shot! Contextually speaking, of course.

And I agree as well, consistency is key. I didn't have a mess inside today at all, am looking for some sign that he might be catchin' on....

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

"CONGRATULATIONS!!!" It's the widdle things that count, after all.

(Sheryl) Gainesboro, TN(Zone 6b)

Or the piddle things, in this case....

Okay, sorry for the major hi-jack! I'll try to get a pic of Squeek in the garden to make up for it.... what am I saying, I don't have a garden to speak of!

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Did you start any seeds?

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

I use that trick when training the Boston puppies. And PC, you might want to clean the piddle area with some vinegar followed by one of those commercial piddle smell removers. That may help also. I use the puppy pads for about a week then we go to newspaper. Thank God these guys catch on quick and easy. If it's warm enough they go out side in the fenced area with Mom. Watching these little guys touch grass for the first time is usually a side splitter......It's like oh, oh, I don't know If I want to touch that? What is that stuff? YUCKY!!! LOL A bit of coaxing and they are ripping and tearing around like crazy. LOL

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

So ... I've been thinking ...

In an effort to attempt to preserve what small garden that I do have out back, I'm contemplating putting up an ugly temporary wire fence around my flower beds to keep the Terror from trampling and digging up my lovelies .

Also, I'm thinking that I may go against my Vision in the front yard and plant a zillion perennials out there. I have several hundred seedlings started under lights and they've got to go somewhere, after all. This could be a horrible failure, but I'm up for the challenge ... I think.

Leave it to a dog to change one's entire view of the world. =)

with your fabulous green thumb, those flowers will grow up and thru the ugly fence and disguise it!!

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Hah! U R Funny, Sally!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Not totally kidding on that either--wonder if you could sort of cage them in so they do grow through some. shoot, but then you couldn't get in around the base.....good luck, at least here with addy we have some room for error when she charges.
Let's just say instead of the doggs getting in the way of plans , that they Clarified our Vision. That is an incredible array of seedling you have going there.

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

This is that horrible 4 ft. green wire fencing w/ stakes that the previous homeowner left behind; I figure that if I keep it up for this first year, that I may stand a chance at training him not to shred the place to pieces and I could hopefully take it down next year. I do have one bed where the fencing will go round the back of it so I could plant taller things along the fence for camouflage action. Along the others, the front, lower growing border plants would be up against the fence.

I received an obscene numer of seeds from swaps this year, so I was compelled to start as wide a variety as I could. ... and I *did*, lol. Now, I just need to figure out where they'll go (besides the Swap).

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

well, at least the fence is green, right? shrug
yup it is easy to put the seeds in a pot then they grow and grow and need more room !! I have stuff all over the house. I never think where these are going to go, just What seeds can I get and grow? I'm looking to take up a bit more grass--hubby keeps thinking he wants to get sod and make the yard really nice. Hah--I point to the dog. Case closed, to me. Well, I told him he could try sod in the front yard, much smallr and much less traffic, worse grass, and public viewing area. Why he thinks it be fun to lay sod... He's not 20 yrs old anymore!

Got my sights set on a new plant rack next year where the dryer was moved out of- there's an extra outlet next to utility sink..should be nice. Esp if I need to raise those baby Tiare flowers Chantell is pushing

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Yup - just call me pusher (hmmm...thinkin' Bambi - line)
I just sucked it up and bought 7 of those metal fencing at Walmart. They're put out by Misco (my fav pot maker) made of iron (read sturdy) - 25.5" W x 32" H $3.97/each. Tried to find a link for it on Walmart.com but they don't have them online. These are high enough (I hope) to discourage the pups from going to the "dark" side...i.e. mom's plant places...LOL. Was also thinking they'd be great "dividers" between mine and my neighbor's front yards - read: another thing to let MG's climb up....yipeeee!!!
