What's a Cottage Garden Without a Dog?

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh my - I am having serious garden envy, Fancyvan! I'm loving everything about Photo #1.

Collage: I'm loving those pic's, too! Fancy is very pretty, and ... at least she has wonderful culinary tastes? (Bad Dog!) LOL! Seriously, she's adorable and I really like your garden a lot.

Oh, and what mournful/ innocent expression on her face in that last picture, lol!!!

Such a pretty girl.

Before we got the electric fence, we had a similar tomato experience with the little chihuahua devil, Bentley. He would pull off all of the tomatoes and share them with our bigger dog, Fargo. We ended up just tolerating it because he couldn't reach most of them, anyways...

Can't imagine the terrors of a big wolf-sized beast. :)

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Ginger (our current Boxer) and Penny (our previous Boxer) both learned the "acceptable" areas to relieve themselves. Each time they would run through and squat in my flower beds they got scolded. However, if they made in the grassy areas of our fenced in back yard, they would get a tiny treat. Who says bribery doesn't work??? :~)

Also, if you go to your local pet store, they have healthy biscuits called "GrassSaver" made by NaturVet, which helps stop dogs from yellowing the lawn. It does seems to help.

As for eating veggies from the garden, Ginger loves tomatoes, but so do squirrels! I kept blaming Ginger for taking just 1 bite out of our red ripe tomatoes, which were still attached to the vine. Then one day I noticed that several "sampled" tomatoes were left hanging precariously from our split rail fence. Ginger wasn't the culprit, the #$%!*^ squirrels were! Gggrrr!!!

How can you blame Fancy? She has such a beautiful and innocent face.....who me Mom?

Hi wrightie,
Love the look of that little guy! Cute puppy. I had two Standard Poodle puppies to train and it was near impossible. I think PC may have met one of the bros a number of years ago during a demo of my concrete garden mirror making ventures.

Training the pup, remember they will grow out of puppy-dumb in at least 2 years.
Training; be consistent and persistent. You have to be on their case constantly in a gentle, alpha female kinda way....
read and watch Cesar Milan without fail. He is the Dog Whisperer on Discover Channel. I know some like him some don't but you have to buy into something to help you through the baby months.

Good luck - gentle consistent discipline, exercise, love.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Since you liked that one.....here she is with one of her favorite snacks - she digs them up and carrys them out to the grass and settles down to chew!

Hi Wrightie!!! I just saw this thread! Is that your puppy? I kow it's a Great Dane, but my golly! It looks just like an English Springer Spaniel puppy!

In any case, it is one VERY good looking puppy!! Congratulations!

Suzy

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Hiya Suzy! Yep, that's him. He comes HOME next weekend, finally. Did you decide on a new pup yet? Last I heard, you were going to go for another ESP.

Fancy has great expressions; I imagine that she must have a wonderful personality.

Aguane, my parents had a Standard Poodle - such fun dogs! What colors do you have (had)? A Dane takes even longer to mature, so I anticipate goofball puppy antics for closer to three years. Would you believe that I (by choice) do not have cable/satellite, so I don't get Milan's show. I am, however, a big fan of Ian Dunbar and have several of his DVDs along with his Must Have book on puppy training. Could you come over to give a demo on concrete garden ornaments? I have a book on it, but still haven't created anything -- I really want to make a bird bath using an elephant ear and a pile of sand as the form. Speaking of bird baths - Sophie would stand over mine and drink from it (as I knocked on the bathroom window upstairs and screamed through the glass at her ...)

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

The perfect elevated drinking bowl!! never mind a bit of bird poo...
Addy did seem to like pottying 2 (a 'home run' in our house) in the strawberry patch at first, I think because it is along the fence. I started keeping her on the leash until she did 'it', elsewhere and treat like Shirley says. I wouldn't let Addy have her ball and play until she was done, but that was when she was at a predictable stage in her daily potties.
Now at 9 months she is starting to show restlessness when she needsto go out. Or rather, we are finally learning to notice her restlessnesss.............

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

I love the picture of Fancy eating her carrot fresh from the garden. Don't you love how they hold the food so carefully between their paws? She's even licking her lips to show how much she enjoyed it! Carrots are an excellent source of vitamin A, plus the carrots help promote good eyesight too! What a smart dog!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

OMG Wrightie...this thread is a stitch!!! You mean the dogs are suppose to "go" in a designated area? I'm going to a step up from the "tacky white fence" (LOL Sally) to the taller tacky metal fence. Sadly my oldest Rott thinks she's suppose to do clean up beneath the bird feeder in the back corner...this may prove to be a challenge since I do NOT want her there. Course I could build up some ammunition on the deck i.e. cans w/pennies in them...position myself with cammi's on in the corner and pretend to be a sniper.
Oh wait you wanted suggestions didn't cha? Ummm....when poop and pee go places they shouldn't moved them to "correct" area ASAP so the nose will lead to correct area.

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

:~) Chantell, think of it less as a "supposed to go in a designated area" and more of a "wow, wouldn't it be nice if they did" kinda thing. I figure that if I start from Day 1, then my garden actually could stand a chance of survivin ... though I'm not holding my breath. heh

& Sally ... The previous owner had a bunch of that temporary wire fencing for his Lab', so being the brilliant person that I am (hah), I made sure to save it in case we did need to keep kanines out of something. I used it a couple years ago to keep Sophie off of our turf that I was trying to grow. Good chance that I'll bust it out again before too long!

Perth,, ON(Zone 5a)

well, I'm looking forward to this years gardening season, dogs, cats and all.

F. Lucky really doesn't like anything pointed at him, but, I could not resist this pic.....

He enjoyed snacking on the strawberries last summer, too.

That's such a face ... an F. Lucky face at that! (I think he's hiding something)

BonkerZ, I just cannot read his name and *not* laugh. It's impossible.

Perth,, ON(Zone 5a)

yup, he thinks I was watchin to catch him snackin on the strawberries.......here I was blaming the ants for chewing on them, and it was F. Lucky grabbing them and trying to pull them off!

I wuz thinkin, I don't think I could have a garden and NOT have a dog... or 3..... they just seem to go together... lots of fun memories!

They are always game to to out to the garden and flop in the sun (or shade, as the day may determine, lol) always ready for a break and a drink (and a cookie, too) works for me!

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

I happen to agree ...

doG is gooD

I miss having one. I think that my plantZ do, too.

!!! W-R-I-G-H-T-I-E !!!

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

hmmm....I wonder what flavor treats?? Our 5# terror doesn't care for beef - prefers chicken and carrot flavors - picky little terror... One of my favorite times is when they each get a rawhide chew for an hour or so each day - I put 4 down on the floor for 3 dogs - and they immediately grab one and run to their own bed, then start prowling to see whose they can steal - so they're busy sneaking around each other for a few minutes until they settle down with their chew of preference - LOL! And yes, they are multiple flavors - what's the fun in giving them no choice?

2 days and ticking......

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Here's one of the reasons I like having dogs - you simply can't do this with a cat (I've had both).

This is what dogs do when they can't be handling their responsibilities in the cottage garden (SOMEone has to make sure those things taste right...) - in real life they are super heroes...

ooh - that book on Amazon IS cool! The dog on the front looks VERY familiar...is it me, or is there a possible familial resemblance between the dog on the cover and F. Lucky?

(Now I'm going to have to go to Half Price Books AGAIN.......)

Dryad, I bought a used one in good condition for a dollar and change at that Amazon link. I definitely agree on the F. Lucky resemblance!

Perth,, ON(Zone 5a)

lol, that MUST be his serious older brother Bob......

beautiful book!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Here's a handsome boy, right Dryad?

http://www.amazon.com/Living-Dogs-Collecting-Traditions-Afield/dp/B00008NRHZ/ref=pd_sim_b_img_3/102-1044890-9175350

Oh, sorry, Wrightie, off topic of Lucky -- 2 more days.... PUPPY BREATH!!!!

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

LOL -- it's not off topic, Suzy! That is a handsome guy. Do you have any dogs now?

F. Lucky is Drivenbonkers' groovy dog.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Yes, I have that L&W English Springer Spaniel -- looks a lot like the picture in the link above.

BUT he looked like your little guy when he was little, well, except the ears were a little lower, and the paws were A LOT smaller. LOL!

Sorry, about the name -- what is the name of your pup? I saw him referred to as Terror and Puppy.... am thinkin' it's neither of those LOL!

Suzy

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

All of the Above! Actually his name is Zebedee (see BBC's Magic Roundabout for context), but you can call him "Zeb" if you prefer ...

Are you still planning to get another puppy?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Zeb. Okay, ZEB. I'll remember :))

Naw, the Puppy is on hold..Alec says he doesn't want no stinkin' puppy.
Pretty sad when a SPANIEL is running the show, isn't it? (Probably the most biddable dog in the world LOL!)

Suzy

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

He is indeed a handsome boy! And helpful! I knew I could always count on him inspecting my work during the piggie swap - LOL! This is a pic from one of those threads - here's the handsome devil making sure that we knew he was going to be double checking our work. And I don't doubt he had something to say about a puppy, he's got quite a vocabulary.

OH Wrightie.....when are you headin' out to pick up that little man?

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Tomorrow morning. It's a six hour drive. We'll stay overnight with some old friends tomorrow, then pick him up on Sunday morning. I hope that we get back home before dark so that I can give him the Grand Tour of HIS garden in style.

=)

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

And pics....pics....did I mention pics?!?!??!?

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh, I'll have pic's!!!

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Does he get his own "aim here" post in his little patch? One of the women who works with the volunteer group we got our pups from said she always put a little rubber fire hydrant in the middle of the piddle pads for her puppies and rescues, and then moved it outside to help them get the idea...

I've not had the nerve to have a male dog again - years ago I had a guy (Howdy Doody the Wonder Dog) who was part black lab part mastiff - great dog, but BIG. I brought him home to visit mom and dad (from FL to IN) and he comes in all happy, wagging his head and tail, walks over to Dad's recliner and hikes his leg on the back. I was horrified - Mom and Dad laughed - said it was Howdy's way of making himself at home. Good thing they were dog people!
