Every year during spring thaw the back part of my property(which is wooded) floods. The "pond" usually lasts about 3 weeks and the back acre is unusable until it dries up. I would like to know if anyone has suggestions on what types of trees I can plant to try and dry it up in less time. Thanks.
trees needed to help with spring thaw flooding
You might try moisture-loving native plants that can deal with temporary spring inundation: lobelia siphilitica, caltha palustris, lobelia cardinalis, iris versicolor. As far as trees go, I understand that red maple, serviceberry, yellow & gray birches, & cottonwood are among those that do well in NY and have fairly high water requirements.
i don't think any trees will unless you get very warm temperatures.
I think you can definitely find things to plant there that will do OK with the seasonal flooding--but I don't think you're going to notice a huge difference in the amount of time it takes the water to go away. So if that's the only reason you're planting there, I'd consider installing a drainage system instead, that'll be more effective at getting rid of the water.
