Cinder Block retaining wall

Jacksonville, NC(Zone 7a)

Does anyone have a good website, reference area for building concrete cinder block retaining walls? I plant to build two retaining walls to terrace my back yard. Any other information on tips and hints on facing the blocks would be great. I am going to face the retaining walls with slate rock. I have a pretty good idea of how to get it all done, but any expert advice would be great. Thanks

Here's a page that has some links to some instructions--didn't have time to look through the links but I think it ought to have some of what you need. You can also try googling "cinder block retaining wall" and I bet you'll get a ton of hits. http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/article/0,,219681-6,00.html
The most important things are the footings (making sure you go down deep enough into the ground to support the wall) and drainage (make sure water pressure doesn't build up behind the wall). You also didn't mention how tall these walls were going to be--in many areas if you are building something over 3 feet tall (actually limit may vary slightly by location) then you need to get a permit to do the work. And with something 3' or over even if you don't need a permit, that's when the engineering behind the wall becomes much more critical.

Thanks for the information. The project is going to be two walls. One is about 18" and the other 27". I will post some photos of the area and my "grand" plan for landscaping.
