White stuff on my kalanchoe

I've got a nice, flourishing kalanchoe. All of a sudden I noticed a white film on some of the leaves. I wiped it off.

Any ideas what this is, and why it suddenly appeared?

And what to do about it?

A picture would really help. It could be something as simple as spots from hard water, or something more serious like insects or fungus but without a picture it's nearly impossible to say.
