(Let me start off by saying that I'm in zone 9A where most things will grow) I bought the bio dome and promptly planted four different types of seeds. WRONG !!!!! Some seeds have poked their heads up on a spindly stem and others are still laying dormant. The dome is in a sunny window and I've opened the green vents on the dome lid.
I am now at a loss as what to do. Should I take the lid completely off? How can I make the stem stronger? When do I bring the dome outside?
My husband , the old farm boy, said that I could have just planted the seeds in the ground.
I guess this year will be a learning experience with the bio dome but I really could use any tips.
Thanks in advance, Dumb Dogwood
please help this bio dome dummy
I think your problem is light...seedlings need many hours of strong light, so a sunny window in the wintertime often isn't enough (even though it might feel like a lot of light, sun coming in through windows isn't as strong as you think, plus in the winter you don't get that many hours of sun because the day length is too short). I bought cheap fluorescent light fixtures from Lowe's for my seedlings, you don't need fancy grow lights or anything. The lights should be no more than a couple inches above the top of the seedlings, and I generally leave mine on for 16 hrs a day.
You might also check out the seed germination forum--there are lots of great discussions over there which I'm sure you'll find helpful.
