The majority of the plant was beginning to rot and it looked like it was much too late to save it. So I traded a tiny Purple Velvet Plant for a few live cuttings of the Aloe. I suggested they cut off all the live parts and just start over --- this time making sure they have good drainage and water sparingly.
I had to remove some rotten parts from the cuttings and hopefully they will root and take hold. They are a nice healthy "aloe green" so that's encouraging.
Update on Dying Aloe Vera Plant
My Aloe did that and I hate to say this but it didn't make it. It was a smaller plant in a pot with two bigger aloe plants and it was like a mold or something well I had to get rid of it for the others sake. I felt terrible but it had to be done, but the good news the other two have room to grow and are doing great. So good luck with yours.
To my knowledge, Aloes cannot be started from "cuttings". When you say "cuttings", do you mean just the "leaves"?
Aloes can only be started from rooted side shoots that you remove from the mother plant. As long as they have any roots on them, plant them in a small clay pot and support it for a while until it "takes hold". Keep it barely moist erring on the dry side.
In about 6-8 months, the little plant will be on it's own.
Gita
The pieces brought to me had roots but they were mostly rotten. So I did the best I could. I cut the roots back as far as I felt was safe.
So far the plant seems to be doing well. This will be the first Aloe plant I've grown.
I'll keep you all posted.
