Lucky-Bamboo Lower Leaves Health

Dear Community:

Hi, a few months ago I wrote in the Plant ID Forum, the plant turned to be a lucky bamboo, but the older plants lower leaves slowly turn yellow due to what you will see in the pictures. The questions is, it's due to aging and its natural process (since the uppers ones keep growing) or something else?

I grew one of these in water years ago and it was very easy, no maintenance except making sure there was enough water in there. If it were growing in soil I'd have a million theories about what was going on, but since it's in water the only thing I can think of is the water quality--do you have hard water, well water, something along those lines? I know I visited someone in FL once and the water at their house literally reeked of sulfur, so if your water's anything like that (or even not quite that severe) then your plant might do better if you grew it in distilled water instead. Some Dracaenas (which is what lucky bamboo is) are sensitive to some minerals/impurities in water, and this sensitivity is probably exacerbated when you're growing it completely in water rather than in soil. The only other thing I can think of is maybe not getting the right amount of light.

ecrane3 thanks for the respond, the funny thing is this plant never seemed to have an issue with either sunlight or tap water. The original location on sunny days it would receive at around one hour of direct sunlight, but since discovering it would be a good idea to be receiving indirect sunlight they were moved (it receives plenty of indirect sunlight). It really puzzles me, probably the plant adapted and now it wants our attention due to the change! These past weeks I collected rain water for the plants, today I may have to move one and see the effects.

I just got some lucky bamboo, so I've read up on them. The main thing I've read is they are sensitive to the fluoride and chlorine in tap water, so sometimes its better to use distilled like ecrane said. Also, it mentioned dumping out the water every 3-7 days and filling it with fresh water so the water doesn't get stagnant or anything. Also suggested putting a drop or two of fertilizer in the water about every other time you change the water. Hope this helps a little!

Thanks kls for tips, I have done almost all except for the fertilization every week. But because is only 1-2 drops, I will make some adjustments tomorrow, since on Mondays the water is replaced.
