Recommendations for S/N Carolina nurseries?

Winnetka, IL

Oh, rednyr, you should see the sculpture that's going over there as well. It won't smell, but it's pretty obscene.
Can you tell how much I like these neighbors? : )

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

ok, rednyr and tggfisk, this is what the site says about weekend visits:

We only schedule visitors during the week, since our weekends are scheduled very tight, either with on-site classes or out-of-state travel. It is virtually impossible for us to allow visitors during weekends, unless it is an open weekend or we have a scheduled class.

y'all know my schedule is flexible, so I'm fine with whenever, but now I;m all gettin antsy to put an order in

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

Plantaholic= oh do d-mail me and tell me whatcha are putting up over there...better yet send me a pic...LOL

Garner, NC(Zone 7b)

You know, red...that strategy would work if Trop didn't have her gift certificate:-) At least this way I can blame it on her...Yep! That's EXACTLY what I'm doin';->

Winnetka, IL

rednyr- I had a pic, but it has disappeared. The piece is out of wood, and pretty decayed already, so for the moment it's tarped in a cart for protection. Once it warms up a bit, I'll place it in the garden and mail you the pic.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

plantaholic, have you been to Charleston yet? If not, this is an article from today's paper about a lovely, *very, very Charleston*, garden walk.

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

ardesia - yep - she came about 3 weeks ago...but I am not sure if she plans a return trip anytime soon (Meegan - if I spoke out of turn just slap me woman lol) she actually round two of the coolest iron chairs there! I was so jealous... LOL

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Well, fooey, sorry she missed this walk. I had been trying to find this map earlier but with my house being out of commission I couldn't find anything. I was so glad to see the article in today's paper. It is a neat, quiet and lovely stroll if you get down this way.

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

thanks ardesia! I still plan on taking my mom down for a mini vaca for her some weekend...if my work will co-operate LOL I thought I was going to have to trade my first born just to get the sunday we tour elizabeth lawrences gardens off!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

LOL, there were times I would have seriously considered that. :-))))

Winnetka, IL

ardesia, I have indeed, and missed the garden walk by three days or so. What's more, we stopped at the Biltmore on the way home, and it was pouring rain, so we passed on the gardens : ( Next time.

rednyr, SLAP LOL. Never would I slap you! I will come down again, I promise, and you will be the first to know! I think I'll have to wait until some plants die in my garden so that I'll have room....

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

HA! you don't need an excuse to go plant shopping woman and you and i both know so quit pretending like you need an excuse LOL ...wish you were here for the 20th so you could come to Elizabeth Lawrences gardens with us...I could see you know...releasing captive seeds with another 'unnamed' dg'r LOL

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

who does that?

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

HA - I knew you were out there lurking...

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

I think that two weeks of cloudy weather really messed me up

lol...plus, I have way too much stuff to get into the ground or repot to be on here at all

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

well you could be like me..outside at 11 at night potting up plumeria last weekend cause it just sounded like a good thing that needed to be done after a few adult beverages...we won't talk about how I had to crawl under the deck to turn on the water in my pj's...ewww...but scott finally fixed me up this week when he took a day off and he made a cutout with hinges on the top of the deck so now all I have to do is lift it and stick my hand down there...shut up...I hear your mind thinking...I'm just a little worried about spiders under there eckkk don't like em one bit...

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

In my neck of the woods I don't like sticking my hand down anything that is a good hiding place. Decks worry me as to what maybe living under it. You weren't around for my little coral (or maybe king) snake incident were you? I took the cap off my irragation controller one day and there was a black widow sitting right there. First time I ever saw a black widow in real life. The red on their backs really stands out BTW. LOL.

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

yep saw one last week when I moved the pool liner...thats when I asked Scott to help me move it and i took the other side...at least our deck is about 4 ft off the ground and only about 4" to the outlet..but you are right Core - I should probably put on gloves first...

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

My youngest son was 10 when we moved back to Columbia and the water meter man came up to introduce himself (that would only happen in SC) and when he met Will he warned him about the Black Widows. Of course, that was fascinating to a boy and he was always out there counting them.

Red, I just went to the hardware store and bought a spigot thingy that goes through the deck. I will attach it to the main spigot with a short piece of hose; I am using a washing machine hose for that.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

Good idea Alice.

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

"spigot thingy" now that there is truly a womans addition LOL I love it! Post a pic for us so I too can go to the Ace H'ware and get one...because I surely don't relish a whole summer of putting my hand in the pit LOL at some point I want to cut into the existing line under the house and instead of it going to under the deck- run it out to the GH so I can make use of my $5 garage sale find of a washbasin - you know the tall white ones your find at lowes to use near your washer and dryer for those really dirty things you need to rinse off prior to putting in the wash LOL Then I can wash up and rinse off anything outside...now that would be 'uptown' in the words of our local auctioneer...

Winnetka, IL

Oh, everyone needs a washbasin of some sort in the GH! I'm still trying to get a hose bib out in my veg garden- but the GH is taken care of : ) If I go out of town for any length of time, I just hook up a sprinkler on a timer; no black widows necessary!
Funny that I've never seen one, having grown up in St. Louis. You'd think I've had seen a ton. As it is, I had a colorful specimen inhabiting some boxwood last summer, but he was black with yellow markings, nothing dangerous! For dangerous, I have the furry four-legged slobbery things that inhabit my sofa LOL

Deanna- Your bamboo is going to get planted out next week, once the snow has stopped : ( Any houses for sale in your 'hood? : )

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

OK, here goes. My deck runs the entire length of my home and there are steps on one end and the spigot is on the outside of the house right by the other end. I could run a hose up there but I always had to walk several hundred feet every time I wanted to turn the water on and off.

I found out the spigot thingy is actually called a sillcock. Mine is 10" long and I'll drill a hole in the decking and insert the bottom of the sillcock through the hole. I will use a washing machine hose from the existing spigot, feed it through the lattice under the deck and attach it. The outside spigot will be "on" all the time. Thats the reason I am using a washing machine hose as opposed to a short length of regular garden hose because it will be under pressure all the time. The horizontal flange on the sillcock will sit flush with the decking. Hope this helps, I am such a girl at explaining plumbing things.

Doh........ I almost can't help myself. giggle giggle. Plumbing has such wonderful names.

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

you are a bad boy Core.....

Meegan...there are so many homes for sale around here it is a buyers delight...you coming down here woman! now that would be ultra cool...but if you just need a getaway pad...heck mine is always here...FOC except for some garden work LOL JK...I know the snow can get on your nerves at times...I hated "Lake effect snow" - I just wantd to slap the weather guy everytime those words came outta his mouth....you really need to come down for the Riverbanks Zoo plant sale the 26th....LOL

surfside beach, SC(Zone 8b)

rednyr

I will be coming to Riverbanks on the 25th with a group from Coastal Carolina University.I didn't know anything about the plant sale on the 26th.Too bad! I don't want to drive and I spent an awful lot on the Brookgreen Gardens sale.I guess I will have to wait until next year.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

You will probably be going to the Botanical Gardens part of Riverbanks. Don't forget to take the tram over the bridge to the zoo; the gardens on that side of the river are lovely too.

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

Thanks Ardesia! Fleurs had sent me the snipet from the newspaper regarding the sale - I am so hoping to get some great EE there....I have gone to the Zoo several times - Jenna (my 17 yr old dd)did an internship there with the tigers the spring before her passing away and she talked for days about how exciting it was...she so wanted to be a large cat vet. - when she passed away we asked for donations to the large cat exhibit in lieu of flowers- the folks at the zoo were simply awesome ....going to the zoo is right up there next to being in my butterfly garden...it uplifts my spirit most definately!

Downscalebabe - what group from Coastal is coming? My son is a soph at coastal majoring in Art History (this semester - last sem it was int'l econom. LOL) His band was to play Friday nite at something I think having to do with greek week or some odd thing - they played about a month ago too(just a few songs - it was like some sort of talent show)

surfside beach, SC(Zone 8b)

What kind of band is he in?My daughter and her husband are both musicians and were adjunct professors at Coastal. She for cello and he for trombone.

We have a wonderful "lifetime learning institute" at coastal with classes in just about everything you ever wanted to study. One of the classes is with a naturalist and we take trips to many fascinating places.A few weeks ago we went to Bull Island a nature preserve between Georgetown and Charleston. We have a new campus in Litchfield.

I am always surprised at the amount of "culture" offered in this area not known for high brow interests.

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

Let me see if I can describe Darrins band - I think he would put it as "rock fusion with an Afrikan and Blues influence" His music taste is pretty eclectic....LOL Coastal sure does have some neat programs and opportunity's available - He is going to Coasta Rica in May for a month which will go towards credits for him...

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Doesn't he need a chaperone???????

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

Is he going to the good side or bad side of Coasta Rica? There is a difference. LOL. Probably doesn't matter to him, make sure he gets his shots. Wouldn't want to come back with jungle rot or whatever.

Winnetka, IL

Like I need a vacation home, Deanna! : P I do appreciate the offer of shelter. Since it's impossible for me to walk through a garden without weeding, I should have no probs earning my keep! At least it's sunny today, and it's supposed to hit 60F tomorrow, so we're catching up to you southerners.

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

Ardesia - there are numerous kids from the college going to San Jose, they are all staying with individual host familys and will attend Coastals sister college there. Coastal offers a unique range of international studies and the kids get to go for the same tuition cost as in state SC residents pay (for example - he could go to their sister school in Austraila for the same cost as going to Coastal in Conway) Since Darrin is doing a minor in Spanish this was a great opportunity for him to use conversational spanish everyday and strengthen his ability in spanish.

I know it sounds scary ...at first I wasn't really thrilled about it...but then I remembered how much I travelled when I was younger and how much I learned about cultural diversity and 'the big picture'. Trust me - its not easy letting him travel anywhere after having lost one child already you get pretty uptight about the 'what ifs' ....but I can't let my own personal issues cloud his desire to learn more about this world :o)

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

San Jose is not the good part, BTW. I've done a fair amount of travel on a budget so I got to meet many locals and moved by local transportation. LOL. Warn your son that monkeys are not cute, kind of mean spirited trouble making animals. Good surfing on that side if he heads for the coast. To bad I didn't take pictures back then. I have a big 10 year gap with lots of travel and very few pictures.

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

Since San Jose is the capital of Costa Rica one would think it a great catch all for diversity in food, language, couture and such...I didn't know they had monkeys running the streets...thats kind of a funny visual..or did you mean if he travels into the mountains? Good advice though...I'll pass it along to him when i give him the 'mom' talk prior to going...kind of like when he went whitewater rafting and camping for 4 days in KY with 3 of his friends last fall...I told him if he heard banjos RUN...RUN very fast indeed....LOL

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

whats bad about banjos?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Good friends have a daughter working in San Jose and they visited her a few months ago. They said it was a really cool place; I guess like everywhere else, there are good and bad neighborhoods.

One of my son's spent a semester in Spain and it was the best scholastic experience he had in many.many (don't ask, LOL) years of school.

I still think you should chaperone him, there are really neat plants in Costa Rica.

surfside beach, SC(Zone 8b)

Alice I have a better idea. Why don't we organize a trip to Costa Rica to collect plants. You have to get a license but it's not too hard.i had one when I lived in Fl. and brought back plants from Guatemala.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Hmmmmmmmm
