I can see us all now - decked out in safari hats, mosquito netting and the such searching for elusive plant life LOL
Trent- Banjo picking reference was from the movie Deliverence....an older Burt Reynolds and Ned Beatty movie...
DSB - heard surfside had a scary event yesterday too...
Recommendations for S/N Carolina nurseries?
ok. I had heard something like that before but had no clue what it meant! Thanks for clarifying
Oooooooooooooh, Costa Rica is on my list of places to go. I want to go look at all the butterflies and hummingbirds.
I know enough Spanish to order beer and find the bathroom; which are actually two phrases that go well together. ;*>
Jenny
labana and cabana? LOL
As I am sure you can tell my time clock is working a little bit differently than most of you.For the last few months I have been waking up between 3-4 am and falling asleep between 9-10 pm.I need an afternoon nap to get my 8 hrs.I'm sure this will change but I just go with whatever my internal clock wants.Part of the joys of not having to work.
What happened in Surfside Bch?We don't listen to local news and today's newspaper hasn't been delivered yet. Also there is the town of Surfside Beach (less than 5000 permanent residents) and the postal address Surfside Bch.We live in the town which is very quiet when it is not "the season"
Seriously,I have been traveling,a lot of it alone, for close to 50 years and I would love to organize a plant hunting, not necessarily to collect, trip to Costa Rica.We almost had a RU in Chile a few years back but there weren't enough people who were ready to commit when the time came.
I just checked the Charleston paper and could not find anything about CCU or Surfside but I was only reading the headlines, perhaps I missed it.
About that trip to Costa Rica, it is sounding interesting, better check my passport expiration date. Have to do a lot of desensitization with Phil first. He worries when I drive to Surfside, LOL Can you imagine what he would do if I went out of the country?
...I told him if he heard banjos RUN...RUN very fast indeed...LOL
That's not nice. LOL.
Think those might be diehards relatives, he's from up state.
That's the biggest mistake people make when travelling. You have to realize no matter where you go there are some places you shouldn't go, especially in big cities. There is no big city in the US where you would just wander around so why would you do it in a foreign country. Just be aware of where you’re going and what's going on. Also shows of wealth are a no no. Jewelry etc. Polo shirt with docksiders. LOL.
Costa Rica is beautiful and you would probably have a blast out plant looking. Monkeys are in the jungle BTW. I always thought Jamaica is one of the prettiest places, You can go from the hot shore up into the cool mountains very scenic. Problem there is it's also very dangerous.
I jumped off this. It's at Rick's Cafe in Negril. From what I've heard Negril has become a busy place.

Link doesn't work right. If you look for Rick's Cafe cliff diving it will pop up.

Core - I am shocked you would think that is a type of place I would go... :(
red, i think he was kidding
Hi Trent! how goes it kiddo! My musa survived can ya believe it!....I was thrilled to see my clematis and hydrangeas make it without any wilt too...Not only was the GH and playhouse filled with potted plants so is the kitchen...the kids looked and me and said what r u doing creating a jungle theme in the kitchen...hmmm ...now they may be onto something as I think the potted up palms and red mandevillea really add a certain aura to the country kitchen look I had going on LOL
CoreHHI---The real Black Widow has the red "hourglass" on her belly---not her back. I've seen reports of an occasional true Latrodectus mactans with red on the back, but it's extremely rare. There is an imposter out there that wears the red on their back, but it's relatively harmless. I raised these things as a kid (wanted to grow up to be an entymologist) until my mother found out... Had to give my collection away (whole 'nother story!) Now I hate them! But there's another Latrodectus now invading the low country---the Brown Widow Spider (can't pull up the Latin name from the brain file right now...getting old is a PITA!). Just as nasty (some reports say even nastier!) than the Black Widow, and they are "present or accounted for" in South Carolina (all parts).
When we moved to Texas in the '70's, we ran a stable and hired an old Texan as a stablehand. One day it became my time to muck out the stables, so I pulled out my "mucking out boots" and started to put them on. That old Texan kicked my boot out of my hand before I could put it on. Said "Son, ever'thang in Texas either stings, stinks, or sticks, and you don't NEVER stick yourself into sump'in you can't see". Valuable lesson. A scorpion crawled out of the kicked boot... Got the message! And it's still with me. I now always look real carefully before I stick any vulnerable body part anywhere...
that is totally sound advice there stono!
Yes, I always shake out gloves, shoes etc.
Maybe that wasn't a black widow? It was black, big with a round back portion, small head, bright but dark red almost lightning bolt on it's back. Close enough. I'm not fooling with it. Don't like snakes or spiders. For some reason I'm much more at ease with larger animals. That too has a limit. 50 lb gator I'm not worried about. 300 lb gator I'm going the other way. LOL. Angry rooster? No problem.
I don't know if these are up state but we have brown recluse spiders around here. I use to work for a hotel and we had a guy get bit by one in the dunes, we think? His whole arm blew up and off to the hospital he went. They said it was a brown recluse and it did a job on his arm. Not something you want to get by.
The BF's niece was bit by a recluse and the amount of tissue on her upper thigh affected by the bite was horrific.....she had a 50 cent piece size of tissue that to be taken out because it had gotten so bad....I would post the pic but it's pretty gruesome... I am with Core...I hate spiders n snakes and goodness does saying that ever remind me of that song..."I don't like spiders n snakes"
Now I know what you were talking about. The woman died an accidental death. She lived in a town house complex that is near where I live. There are very steep stairs going to the bedrooms. They said that she tripped down the stairs and that it was an accident. Her boyfriend was out of town and she was alone. This happened a few weeks ago.
As far as Jamaica,I did quite a bit of my midwifery training in the Kingston Victoria Jubilee hospital in inner city Kingston.Bullets flying around at night.I was there twice and delivered more than 100 babies and saw most of the country.
Kingston is the top of list for places not to go in Jamaica.
I had a blast there....why didn't you like it Core?
In Kingston?
Might not have been a black widow, CoreHHI, but why take the chance? Stomp the sucker flat! There ARE true Latrodectus mactans that have red on their back as well as their belly, but the "hour-glass" red spot always appears on their bellies. Red markings on their back usually are undifferentiated red markings, but still a clear signal to beware---it could be the real deal. Stomp it! I think you got it right...
