Eggs are Here!

Lodi, United States

Maybe they found a way to escape and go on a walkabout?

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

i am sorry to say that there was no sign of them. Buck being older, he had started wnadering more and being slow to catch up. always he and a few others the last to cross the road LITERALLY the driveway.

so when i was out there later, i heard a mild rucous [ducks?], then went to find the hens, and counted one more missing.

must be one hungry snake. he is gonna be full of holes when i get through with him!

hens and chicks won't be let out tomorrow, and i won't be wandering anywhere without my son's shotgun!

on a funnier side, i was picturing an anaconda snake showing up in penthouse number 5 with 5 small bumps and 14 big bumps, taking a long nap after a huge meal... and hearing the confusion from the dispatcher on the other end of the phone line...

trying to keepa sense of humor. i was about to put out the 9 remaining, which includes the last buckeye of the year, Spunky Monkey, and the last Buckhorn, Better Legs... i really don't want to lose anymore...

That's why I can't free range here. To get maybe 30 in the pot I'd have to grow a few hundred. :-( I hate the idea of feeding all those predators.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

asnd unfortunately, everytime something dies or disappears, dollar signs go through my head. not good for my stress level.

not to worry, my shells are in my pocket and the gun is by the door... DH gone for the day, so i will be out counting as often as possible... 1 little 2 little 3 little chickies, all the way to ten...

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

I got them even when they're in the GH. I count them outside to make sure no one has vanished even though I have it all fenced in. You just can't count too often.

Today I had a bit of a scare. Pigheaded Paul took the malamute off his leash because "he wasn't going to do anything to the animals, just go lie under the deck" Uh huh. I was working when I heard the geese raise a commotion. I looked just in time to see the malamute slinking up to their fence. It poultry fencing and very weak. It would not have kept him out of that enclosure for a minute if he wanted in. He was very sneaky about it too. Instead of going around the house out in the open he snuck over by slipping under the house. I need more LARGE geese here. Half a dozen of those really BIG geese would teach him a thing or two.

MollyD

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

OH YEAH!

still have ten chicks. was too hot for the predator to come back.

i kept going out to refill wtaers with cold well water, hose down the walls of the pen, the ground, filled ponds to overflowing and made huge puddles all over the ground. sprayed the chickens, anyone who got close enough. they would squak and run off then relaize how good it felt and come back by. i even squirted the babies.

the chickens loved standing in the puddles, so i kicked my crocs off too, it really helped.

i came back inside to have a keyboard that blinked out on me. just now went to the basement to get the old spare [it ain't comfy, but it works!] so cool i wanted to stay down there LOL

IT GOT TO 108 TODAY!
SO PLEASED NO CHICKENS OR OTHER POULTRY DIED.

i am beat.

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

It is wearing on me too, TF. All the watering,
spraying anyone who gets close- making mud
puddles all over the place for anyone and everyone.
You had it bad yesterday. I didn't even bother looking
at the thermometer, I knew it was hot.
Looks like it's going to be another day of refilling
waterers. Making sure they are all shaded. No one
died yesterday, and luckily, no anaconda's lurking.
Sprinkled the outside quail this morning. They didn't
seem to mind one bit. I have been getting about 18
quail eggs a day from them, wouldn't be surprised if
that slows down- and I wouldn't mind. i'm not on the
market yet, so I can't eat all those eggs!

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

Very cool here. Barely 70 (after forecast calling for rising temps) and overcast. I had to run the heater in there for them.

MollyD

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

oh, you poor thing Molly [evil grin]

wouldn't have been so bad, only got to 100 by five PM. but all afternoon power was out. turns out a guy was found dead in his electrical repair bucket, then a fire started two blocks down.

no chicks lost, but one was hot enough to try to drown herself in the duck pond, TWICE. she is living inside now...

they do love stadning in the cool water on the ground. and then the damp ground is fun to dig a hole to lay in. many were still so zapped from yesterday they didn't ahve the enrgy to leave the henhouse. and apparently this heat is all MY fault, i am getting dirty looks....

"i think the chickens are plotting against us, dear!"

tf

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

That's okay, try having hot flashes with having that heat. Then you will REALLY feel the heat.

GG

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

oh, i can't wait!

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

i have a feeling i will know what to do. first thing when i come in i always head to the freezer and put... my head init!

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

tf putting your head in wouldn't be bad. It's when you are sorely tempted to climb inside the freezer that you know you've got a problem!

Can you set out wading pools with an inch of water for the chicks to walk around in and cool off? They keep saying the heat is heading this way by the weekend.

MollyD

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

well, i won't fit...

we have two hoses running around the pens. when i refill thw waterers i dump what in them into shallow pans. they h ave shade etc. it's the dern 30 mph hot wind that makes it so miserable!

Hi Thursday: 84

A warm front off to the south is expected to push slowly northward into the region later tonight and provide the focus for showers and storms through the day on Thursday.

Overnight look for increasing humidity levels and scattered shower development after midnight with a chance of thunderstorms as far north as M-72.

And storms the rest of the week.

GG

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

High of 94 or so- winds 15-20mph gusting
to 40. Increased humidity, all this blowing in
from the coast. Rain chances are small, 20%
next couple of days for scattered showers. I
haven't seen a decent rain since the middle of
May.

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

truest are you close to Huston? Orphaned duckling looking for a home in that area.

MollyD

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

Warm and humid. Been raining on and off all day. Some thunder dunders too. Breathing is pretty hard because of the humidity. But, we need the rain. Will make things grow.

GG

Good day for sleeping!!! LOL

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

Rain never made it here but there is some lightening going on now (10:47pm) and hot.

MollyD

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

Maybe? Good Luck for rain if you need it. We certainly did, and the way it rained, was almost perfect. It got a chance to soak in where it is needed.

we have lost a total of seven chicks to something hungry. found a rats nest under a pile of fencing today, and forgot i had the dern thing on safety, three or them went into their tunnel before i got it shot off!

everyone enjoyed the reprieve in the weather today. now to get some rain!

imoved the ten chicks i had in the house outside into penthouse #5, CoopD'Ville. hopefully , well, i t SEEMS pretty predator proof!

the broody sisters and eight remaining chicks [Esther Williams, the swimmer, is in with the indoor chicks in #5] are up in the hardware cloth broodder cage. and since it isn't too hot, i left white light on in the pens, so if something comes in they can see it and move! or attack it!

did i mention i have duck, chicken and guinea eggs in the incubator? when will this hatching madness end?

tf

Lodi, United States

My last hatch will be Wednesday. I am feeling very virtuous about this. Getting that monkey off my back....it feels good to be sensible about this. Of course I really would like a Speckled Sussex and some Nankins from a different blood line and maybe a Dutch Bantam and Riley the Silkie is really cute, it would be nice to have more of them.....Maybe a birchen Marans?

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

LOL, remember that virtuous feeling you had just a moment ago? fleeting memory? getting attached to the monkey now, are we?
