Eggs are Here!

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

Big congratulations to you, new Mama! Any more chicks
yet? So sorry about the infertiles and early death of some.
sigh. I was so disappointed that so many of my shipped
quail eggs were infertile or failed any development. Out
of 24 eggs from 2 sources, I hatched only 4. I plan to order
50 eggs next time. I used a hovabator forced air, and mine
worked great. It has been 'resting' since the 20th of Feb or so,
and I cleaned it very well. I will be using a spray disinfectant
on it and let it sun dry before the quail eggs get here.

I love taynors, I love Miss Traci and I wish princess kathy
a clean bator! haha ;o)

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

Thanks, truest! taynors is royalty now? phhtttt! ;-P

i have 52 going in the hatcher. + three maybes. out of those, only 2 black rosecomb, 2 self blue OEG, and [can't find my BAD EGG list] i think 2 BLRW.

i spent around 100 bucks on the auction eggs. so i will no longer buy, only swap! after all, I have two purebred heritage large fowl breeds!!!

i have ONE that i will take a picture and or video of tonight. it is a Mille Fleur. i paid 15 for six of them with shipping. the only one left had a loppy TAC, but developed anyhow. last night when i candled, there was no movement, so i am thinking it couldn't grow any mor ebecause of the extra space the air cell occupies. so sad. if it is indeed dead, we will preserve it in baby food jars, like we did one buckeye, one black australorp, and one jersey giant that didn't make it all the way.

i don't feel too bad. i kno others are having a terrible time with sick chicks. i will be stocking up on supplements just in case!

one proud mama-to-be [Chuck's mama too!]

I think the only issue with TAC's is, when the chick gets
ready to pip, if the air cell is not where it should be, they
can't get thier first breath. When they pip, a muscle contracts
in thier neck and causes the beak to puncture the air cell.
That's how they can chirp from inside the egg. If the cell is
behind them or off to one side they would get no air. I guess
I can use your egg purchase cost to my shipped chick cost.
I spent $96 for 27 chicks and shipping, plus vaccines, and 1
pak of gro gel plus at $4.
I lost 7 and have 20 left, and so I spent a lot for my 20 chicks.
They had better be some good egg producers! Healthy, big,
and good breeders, as well as the roo's if any, better keep
a good eye on the hens.

I love daylilydaddy.
I love Miss Thang-uhMiss Robbi.;o)
May princess kathy get what she pays for! haha

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

well, the air cell isn't just off to the side, it is also at the top, displacing some of the chicks space. and those eggs are almost as small as quail eggs, so a double air sac takes up a LOT of needed space.

but i am glad i left it in. maybe i will see movment this evening. it is almost time to move it to the hatcher...

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

I would really love to hear the TAC egg makes it. I
think some other members, or I read at least one, had
a TAC hatch. Of course, I would love to hear all your eggs
hatch out perfectly! In a perfect world, I know, but we
can hope, yes?

i love lorak.
i love miss beckie.
I wish a starry night for princess kathy.;o)

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

one self blue from arkansas is pipping! my little cross pullet Chuckie is nearby, she can be my alarm clock!

one bator came unplugged, got near 70 before i noticed. 16 eggs due Monday... got it back up, but soon enough?

Fingers crossed

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Remember...the mama hen jumps off the nest.....the eggs cool......then she hops back on and they are warm again
I've had the power go out for up to 24 hours ,I covered the incubator with plastic and blankets...it didn't save them all but some still hatched

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

when i candled them for the incubator, all were fine! but now some are late pipping. the ones that cooled should be pipping today and tomorrow. nothing yet.

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

How are they this morn?

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

the second batch, that cooled one night are pipping, one is out already! a Buckhorn.

the first batch is done. we only got one live chick from it, the self blue OEG. somehow the humidity didn't hold like it should, but the hygrometer read wrong, as i laid it down. my bad.

so, the TACs. none got big enough, even though there was still movement, they weren't developed enough to pip. and the air sac had gotten even bigger.

there were a few that, had they not dried and stuck to the membrane, would have been beautiful little chicks. may they rest in peace.

tf

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

Oh, I am so sorry you didn't get any more from your hatch. It's always sad when that happens. Maybe you will get more from the second batch. I certainly hope so.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

the second batch has pips. the third batch has two hatched. going to check on one now that has a crooked neck...

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

i guess i should say CHICKS ARE HERE!

...we have one buckeye & a few Black Jersey Giant/Black Australorp crosses. two brown leghorn/JG crosses [& they are solid black & huge!] & the ones struggling to get out are pure JGs. none of the other Buckeyes were able to start pipping. ;-( their shells are too thick & hard...

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

Sorry about your batch. I hope your next ones are all well-fluffy and perky.

My grandfather used to raise the chicks from eggs-I wish he had passed all his info down but unfortunately none of his sons were interested. That's one thing I love about this site-passing of info!

Sue ☺

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

Hey that's great! You posted as I was typing so I missed the great news! We need pics!
If the shells are too thick & hard does that mean they won't make it?

Edited to add: should oyster shell be withheld if you are going to be hatching eggs? Not sure if that would make the shells too hard?

So far this a.m. I've had 3 with TAC hatch...surprized the heck out of me
They were bantam LaFleche bought on eggbid

Congratulations TamaraFaye! What could you have done with such thick egg shells? A hen sure couldn't help. I wouldn't have a clue.....

And congratulation too, crestedchik! My Barnevelder eggs are due to arrive today and if any have TAC I will try to hatch them, since you succeeded.

all of my TACs died, nothing i could do. i don't recommend setting them, but then again... if she did it so can you. might depend on the severity of the TAC, like the percentage of the egg it takes up...

well, a sturdy plastic fork helps, following a good whack on the corner of a 1" plywood countertop! no, i am NOT joking.

thanks to silkiechick for staying on the phone with me so long last night. really got me through those first few so i was better informed and didn't kill any.

have more set for 4/7. so unless i have to appear in court on the 8th, that'll be good. find out Friday.

i have taken pics & worn down the battery. so will post later. got grown up chickens to take care of too!

Hi,
I was just reading this thread and have a suggestion for those floating air cells you get when shipping.

I always let shipped eggs sit for 24 hours with the large end up. This gives the air cell the opportunity to rise back up.

Its worth a try.

M

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

yeah, thanks!

no TACS today. 13 from my own flock. one has been pipping a couple of hours. now i have to leave for the day, so will be nervous and egg-cited!

amd,. yes, have to be in court ALL DAY tommorrow... DH will be watching the kids and the peeps/chicks!

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

good news, didn't have to leave, just doing paper work etc. and don't have to be in court till 1PM. so maybe i won't miss any hatches. come to think of it, time to clean out the brooder again!
