Eggs are Here!

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

Congratulations! On the case and the chicks!
Hope you feel better soon.

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

Congratulations Tf! I was wondering a short while ago how you had made out in court. Glad it went your way!
Happy those babies have started hatching too!

Not one stinkin red cent! Love it! Congratulations, TF!
Also, great news on the chicks! Were you wishing for
more buckeye's? Sounds that way, sorry to hear that, but
you still have a bunch of good chicks! Way to go on today!

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

i will galdly take how ever many or few buckeyes we are blessed with. the others will be good layers, and meat birds. the Buckeyse we will be selectively breeding. and we get so few Buckeye eggs. so far, every Buckeye chick looks perfect, just like we want them to...

i am no tdancing in the streets yet. he can appeal, and likely may. he has been trying to break us for a long time... he is used to bullying people, and DH has helped me to stand up for myself and not take it any longer!

we have one left in the hatcher, it is a JG, and may no thatch till later today. but he is still zipping and breathing last i checked...

pos tpics later. cold wet day here, good for laundry and house cleaning

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

Maybe he will lay off the thing. What a bully. Glad DH
is supportive of you, it means so much.
I like your terminology of 'unzipping' themselves. That's cute!

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

can't take the credit, i heard it from Silkiechick...

this is #7 again. i had to remove her from the hatcher to keep humidity down. she was still attached, so i let her drag the bottome of the shell around while she and it dried out. later i cut it off... i just checked on her, and she is doing great! still has a yold full, but drank a little, and taking it easy...

Thumbnail by TamaraFaye
Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

uh-oh! #7 has fallen and can't get up! a little topsy turvy. she ended up with a bandage splint to prevent splaying...

and #7 later...

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

3 buckeyes in other brooder [3-17 & 3-25] await meeting Creamy PB... till then they put up with the JGs and JG crosses [3-26] and Mr. Purple [3-15]...

amazing how they grow, and at such different rates

tf what does a bandage split look like? I never had any splay legged babies. I used 2" of oatmeal in the nest boxes and later in the brooders. Those babies got a good sturdy workout walking around and it always smelled so good in there :-) Great thing was the moms always had food right at their feet if they were hungry!

MollyD

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

neat idea! i have starter crumbles for footing, sprinkled with brewer's yeast and cornmeal...

i cut a bandage [bandaid like] in half lengthwise and wrap it around to keep their feet under them.

last hatch i had eight with leg probs, due to high humidity. this time i was more careful. only two MAYBE have probs, and they got a splint right away. somewhere in this forum i posted the link on the guinea site that shows ortho corrections...

#8 is out. still in hatcehr [last one] will get him out in a little while and take his pic. he came out last, a JG. Freckle's little bro LOL

meanwhile, put 6 Blue Wheaten OEG eggs in bator. putting large fowl eggs in soon...

and guess who is hatching out next?

Thumbnail by TamaraFaye
Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

Thanks tf. Can't tell who's hatching from that photo :-)

MollyD

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

sorry, just got back.

That is our White Chinese Goose! at least 15 eggs. we have a second nest with 15 viable eggs, which i will take to a friend with an incubator.

the B/W head is our Muscovy Drake. he was keeping the kids from bugging her, or maybe the other female goose whom he chased away.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

oh, here is the whole gang from this last hatch. i set 24 eggs and in the end put 13 in the hatcher, with 10 live chicks, 8 living.

so, 33% hatch rate. now have 6 OEGs, 4 Buckeyes and 4 JG/JG crosses going in for April 30th/May 1st hatch... missing our vacation, might as well get some more chicks, esp Buckeyes....

Molly, i will do a separate thread with pics i took of the splints for splay feet later on. right now time to catch up, then let the boys have the pc... [i want my OWN computer, i don't like to share, ;-(

Wow, TF, you are just an incubating fool, huh. It's so
much fun. My mountain quail are due to hatch May 3rd.
Guess I'll start another thread about them, and the
coturnix.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

yes, i have been called worse, even in court LOL.

Creamy PB didn't make it. we named the cross Crunchy PB in his/her memory...

so we have seven. no Buckeyes, but nice JGs. we will keep the JGcross pullets for laying, and the others for eating. and the pure JG for show, sell, or breed... and pullets for laying OF COURSE>

i am really liking the looks of the leghorn crosses we are getting. but have put out some requests to get a new leghorn roo...

will update later! can't wait to see more of your quail Truest!

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

i hsave new pics! maybe i will get them up today...

this thread started regarding eggs shipped to me so we could have all kinds of fun chickens. but due to the issues of shipping, only one hatched. you see how many hatched out of my own eggs???

i am overlaoded with chickens and loving it. just the bantam townhouses use 5 gallons of DI bottled water every other day!

today i turned almost everyone out. we had sucha good rain last night, and they are digging and finding all sorts of bugs!

tf

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

TF, how is you DHs tooth? I hope it is better. And, did he like the jam?

GG

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

got his tooth out just in time for his reward...

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

cool- that way he could enjoy it!

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

and enjoy it he did, and still is. he marinated some steaks in a strawberry vinigarette with some of the jam mixed in..... mmmmmm is all i can say. obviously i married him for hi sbuilding first and hi scooking second LOL

when i unplugged the little light for the last brooder in the house, somehow the plug for the incubator popped out. so tem pwas way down in the 70s this morning [the house didn't feel THAT cool!] and the rH shot up to nearly 90.

i plugged in back in, and later when they are all warmed back up i will see what survived. had 10 duck eggs, 10 OEG eggs, three leghorn eggs and one BA egg...

tf

Lodi, United States

Oh, bummer! How far along were they?

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

OEGs and leghorns were new. BA was under duck. ducks looked to be more thatn half way done...

Lodi, United States

I think low temp is less serious if it happens early--read somewhere that they just go into suspended animation.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

hpoing when they warm back up they will still be kicking.

meanwhile, four of the broodies chicks have disappeared... still looking, yep, including Buck. Peter was the first to notice while helping me with water...
