Are seed potatoes a must?

I've never grown potatoes before and I've got some fingerlings that I'd like to plant - they've sprouted and look healthy. I've read you should only use "certified seed potatoes" - because of possible disease. My local store only has just a few basic types and I'd have to order anything else online. Is the advice to only use certified seed potatoes generally advisable or just propaganda? :)

It is advisable if you have to depend on your potato crop. A backyard gardener can afford to take the chance. Most storebought potatoes are pretty clean.

when I have a choice, I prefer the certified seed potatoes.

However, I have been known to buy a bag of 'gourmet' potatoes at the grocery store, just for the different potatoes in the bag........

purple 'gourmet' potatoes are delicious when grown in your own garden.

note to self, cruise the spud aisle next time in the grocery store.... they should be showing eyes soon....
