Hi Riverland
Post the "facts from the 1500's" ???
Please go ahead, as many will appreciate where some of these "sayings" come from, at least those from around my date of birth!

Thanks very much I really enjoyed reading that Cindy
I'm here! :-)
I've got "good" coffee, thanks... We went to Hawaii several years ago, and did some roadside "tasting" to discover our favorite Kona, which we re-order by mail every year. It's our weekend "treat" coffee... during the week, we grind beans from Trader Joe's!
I do like the New Orleans style coffee with chicory added. I found a can of Cafe' du Monde (sp?) recently, though, and I can't seem to get it to brew up right... seems much more bitter than I remember, even with plenty of milk.
Your "very fine ground" coffee might make a great cup of espresso!
Hi Critterologist,
The D&E could be espersso, but it's the basic Coffee in the NL. Let me know, as were almost neighbors, being that I now corrected my location, and I am a 6a and your a 6b, so not that far apart. You're only about 2 hours away. Seriously, if you want some of this I will send it to you. All sealed vacuum packed. You might happen to like it.
Ken
Rush, rush Grasshopper so I am told or dubbed recently.
Better yet, swing down this way some time to see Dea, and drop by for a visit. I'll make you a cup of decaff -- or cocoa. I make killer cocoa. I'll swap you a container of Penzey's hot chocolate mix for the coffee. And, who knows? Our "friend" might just happen to drop by... ROFLOL. Oh, Dea and I are going to have a little fun teasing about that... :-)
Ken you really should look into getting a new cardiologist. If he/she is telling you to stop drinking coffee that is just wrong. LOL I think I would rather die. Well maybe I would not take it that far but it's pretty close.
HI Howie,
Thanks for your welcome notes!
The cardiologist has wanted me to start drinking red wine. I just got tired of drinking coffe on flights, and other pilots have cut down also. Lost the taste for it. I bought this Kurig, one shot coffee machine at BJs. Not bad stuff, but ran out of decaf. But, I'm told red wine is better for you. I take enough cardio pills, plavix, altace and vytorin, which to me is too much, But I have no choice in the matter, anymore. I have to maintain my medical stuff to keep flying.
Ken
I refuse to listen to them about coffee. Every time you turn around they are saying something else is bad for you. So I guess I'm drawing the line at coffee. LOL
Hmmm....give up coffee and replace it with red wine?
I can do that! What a way to start the day!! *grin
Shoe
Shoe, ya ain't right! ;)
Hey, Ken, try some Caribou Coffee pods for your Kurig. The Caribou Blend decaf is a middle roast, very good. I'm biased because I work for them, but I was a junkie customer for a few years before I decided I wanted to work behind the counter!
Ken, Welcome to DG !
That thread was the best read I've had in days...except for Sharran's story about Poke Sallit ! I always wondered how some of those expresiions started...now I know !
Looking forward to more of your posts.
JD
Hey, Ken, welcome to DG. I really enjoyed reading your History Lesson. Great stuff.
Hi Garden Wife!
Thanks. Where do I find Caribou Coffee pods? The machine came with about 120 pods. Neat to use but I haven't been around here (NJ) long enough to find a supplier. You work for Caribou Coffee ? Perhaps, you know where to oreder these.
Thanks for your generous welcome to the site.
Ken
aka Grasshoppeoh, rush rush Grasshopper.
Hey Horseshoe,
Something better than red wine...I gave another AUnt of mine, spiked egg nog, that I picked up at Costco. SHe loved it, drinks a glass a day. I later dropped off 2 half gallons of the stuff, and she does it ebery day. Almost like the old Geritol for senior folks, which was 90 proof that gives them a buzz. No wonder why she likes it. I gave it all away to avoid the temptation.
Ken
Thank you JasperDale and Dorothian for you comments. Glad you liked the reading. I'll look the origins of more of these "sayings". It ain't over until the Fat Lady sings? (Yogi Berra?) Nope. It's the real Mccoy?
Ken
I knew you would have something to say about that Shoe. I had an uncle that would start with whiskey in his coffee and switch to coke and whiskey after that. He bought the stuff by the half gallon and probably went through a few a week. I'll stick to a beer every now and then and leave the wine and hard stuff to others. I never liked the taste of either.
Ken, you can order them at cariboucoffee.com and I know Keurig sells them at their site. Some warehouse clubs carry them, too.
Thanks for the laugh this morning Howie. Yes, the old Geritol stuff, a way to hide what you Unncle was doing in open. That morning blast. I don't like the taste of the whiskey either. I prefer O'douls etc. Like the taste of beer, especialy the european makes.
Ken
Hi Gardenwife,
Thanks for the info on Keurig. I have one box of 18 pods of the original 6 remaining. Its this Green Mountain "Sumatran Reserve." Caffeniated. Too strong for me and I have really excluded coffee from my diet. I'll try the Keurig sit. I know I can buy another new machine with the xtra pods, but, don'rt need a new machine.
Ken
Ken, et al,
Red wine is high in Vitamin B12, and other antioxidants.
They have one of those Keurig machines at the place where I've been going for PT. It's great for the customers and staff alike since no one has to maintain the coffee pot, the coffee doesn't sit and get scorched, etc. If we didn't drink a lot of coffee, I'd get one. You can make your own coffee pods for these things and make them quite cost efficient.
Hey Bubba,
Red Wine is great, but I'm afraid I'd like it too much. My cardiologist wanted me to drink it every day. I saw a study that says 2 glasses (8-10 oz) per day, but do treadmill cardiology combined. I have to get working out again, everyday. Its hard to workout on a regular basis when I am going hotel to hotel after 8-10 hour flights. But laziness sets in, and if in a good place, I want to hit the restaurants near my hotel to eat and relax after the long flights.
Thanks,
Ken
Hi Garden Wife,
I see these machines all over too. Going to PT? PT to me is proficiency training that I have to undergo every 6 months in Miami for my job.
I bought the Keurig because, when I was home, I would do a 10 cup pot with the Dutch and German coffee I would bring home from trips, AND when it was filled I would invariably keep hitting the supply, filling up my mug until it was empty, which was TOO much caffeine to consume.
SO, I saw this Keurig B50 at BJ's (Like Sam’s and Costco) with a large extra supply of many selections and a bunch of decaf stuff. Good price with the supply at 129.00. It easy to use. Wish they would put something like this in the airplane galley.
How do you create a pod? I'd do it using my decaf dutch D&E, but don't want to make a mess , like I did refilling HP Printing cartridges, and wrecked a printer in the process.
I found all the literature for this thing and it has a large booklet listing all the types of coffee etc. I’ll look online too.
Thanks for your help GardenWife!
Ken a/k/a the Grasshopper
I hear you, Ken.
Main job is installing computer systems for hospitals, so normal schedule is:
On an outbound "bird" on Monday, back on Friday. So I am very familiar with hotels and different cities.
Usually find a convenient grocery store and pick up a few items, so don't eat out as much. Also have so many points with all the hotel clubs, get upgrades and access to their gym/workout facilities. BUT, seldom use those - prefer to walk around - neighborhood, local malls, parks, etc.
On the road, breakfast is either a bowl of cereal, or one or two small yogurts,
lunch - soup or salad or sandwich, supper - fruit, cheese, beer or wine, avocado, cold cuts, etc. or dine out once or twice a week.
Weight has remained within a narrow range for many years.
Bubba,
I can identify with you, Weight, ahhh.........somethimes a lost cause. Narrow range, wish it was the other end of the scale.
I used to be (20 years ago) about 175-180. The last few years I had some heart problems, attack in 2002, and then put on medication, beta blockers, and 3 months I gained weight in areas I never had a problem with. I stopped taking this drug Toprol and only take plavix for 3 stents and altace for BP (which was always 120/80) and vytorin and aspirin. But, I cannot lose any weight. I am now about 197, and its probably because I don't workout enough and frequently. I spent about $1000 on 2 healthclub memberships one here in NJ and the other in the Netherlands. So far, last year went to each one maybe 4 times. I just might buy a treadmill again, as ex-girlfriend removed the Trotter trainer I had.
I avoided Breakfast this am. And now luchtime and have no desire to have anything. I attribute the whacky weight stuff to being 6-15 times zones out of EST. Some flights I cross 8 time zones. It's also hard to stay on scedule with medication too with the time changes.
I try to pick up food when traveling, but some places I question the safety of it. Some of the guys hit McDonalds and fastfoods, which i will not do at all. I'll eat nuts in the service bar in the room before I do that.
Thanks Bubba!
Ken
Hello Ken!
Wishing you a very big "WELCOME TO DG"! As usual, I'm a bit late to the party.
It's nice to read about you! Knowing you are a friend of Dea's says very much. ;)
Michele
Hi Michele ( Why Badseed?)
Wow, I get the impression tha Dea holds some weight around this website. I have really enjoyed myself since she guided me to DG the other night while I was traveling. Now that I am home, I enjoy epriodically checking the boards (threads).
Do you live near GardenWife in Ohio?
Thanks for your welcome Michelle!
Ken
Hi GardenWife,
What's your first name? I found the catalougue for Keurig. Is that Caribou Blend decaf really good. I'll order some of them directly, unless I can find a store near me. BJs only carries the Green Mountain Full Strength, which I am about to try.
Thanks,
Ken

I hold no weight - these are all just wonderful friends; the best around.
DH (Dear Husband) Michael and I had the immense pleasure of having both Howie and Gardenwife (Kimberley) stay with us for a bit when he got a new spine at Johns Hopkins. Yup, the man got himself a brand new spine :)
I guess "respect" and "love" versus "Holding weight." Dea.
It was nice to hear about Howie and Kimerley and the JH experience. How is he doing now? I had no idea that this procedure could be done.
Grasshopper?

Ken
I'll let Howie and Kimberley tell you their story :)
Horseshoe,
You won, I haven't had any coffee in about 2 months, except for decaf 2 or 3 times. Well, I made a "pod" of hight test Green Mountain, and real feel it in my sytstem. Now about to make one more and be flying. You know, glass of red wime or spiked egg nog. may have been better.
Ken
LOL Ken! badseed is a joke of sorts (just don't believe what anybody says about me). My MIL always called me a bad egg for taking her last baby from her. He was 28! Geesh! How long did she think he'd stay single??
Everyone loves Dea. She's a wonderful friend to all and has a huge, giving heart.
Gardenwife and Howie live about three hours North of me and we are longtime friends. I do get to see them at least once a year.
I'm originally from Cincinnati but we outgrew our property and decided to take up farming on a small scale. So we packed up our six daughters and thousands of plants and moved to Lynchburg.
Bring on the spiked nog!!
Michele
Yes I would agree with Michele you don't want to believe what everyone says about her. Just the bad stuff, the good you can through out with the baby. LOL.
I did not really get a new spine but you could say that. I have a lot of hardware in my back now that makes my old spine stronger and better. Things are wonderful since the surgery. I can walk long distance now and have very little pain.
Dea and Michael are the best and you could not ask for a better set of friends.
welcome from upstte new york. playing catch up.
Hi Michele-Badseed,
Mother In Law? You think she'd be happy to see him go, and you're the bad egg. LOL I have a friend that I work with that lives about 60 miles south west of Cleveland and wnet into farming and raising Ridgebacks. But, he has his lovely wife to manage things while he is on the road for about 17 days a month. They keep inviting me to go out and see them and the dogs. Ah, I'd probably want to adopt a pooch and bring him here, but then who with watch him/her?
6 Daughters? wow. I thought one was challenge enough for me at 21. That's a busy place.
Ken
Hi Howie,
Do you set off the metal detectors at the airport with you travel?
I had a friend that had large pins and when she traveled, got delayed while searched. I know several years ago coming into JFK on a Delta Flight while in uniform, I was detained at immigration, because many radiation detectors’ when off on handheld beepers, and was escorted off to the side. They asked if I had any medical tests, and fortunately I had a doctor's receipt with me, for the fee ($15) from two weeks earlier, when I had my annual nuclear stress test for renewal of my FAA medical certificate. I have to go through this stress test process every June 1st +/- 2 weeks, since my heart attack in 2002. After I shared the story with Morris County Cardiology, the cardiologist, the following year gave me a note to carry, as well as their other patients who travel, stating that I had this type of test with radio isotopes.
That must have been an ordeal that you went through in Maryland and the recovery period too. I imagine it took a while? It was fortunate that you had good friends in that area that you could care for you and your wife. How long ago did you have the surgery?
.
Do you have to go back and get checked periodically? Or take medication? I know I do not like taking medication, but have to keep the blood thinned out and the cholesterol stuff too.
Thanks for your emails.
Ken
Are there a few Herbies' on here? Thought I saw that earlier.
Thanks for your welcome Herbie 43 in Upstate NY.
