Tomato Blight

Franklin, MA

Hello Everyone!

Last summer and the year before I had problems with blight on my tomato plants. Everything I read says that you should not plant there again for 2-3 years, but my problem is limited sunny locations in my yard for a veggie garden. Does anyone know any ways to get around this? I can't imagine having no veggie garden for 2-3 years!

Thanks!

Your best bet would be going to containers. That way you can shift the plants around if you need too, depending on what type of tomato you're growing. I googled a couple of the extension office sites and this is what they suggested:

Rotation with nonsusceptible plants, such as corn, beans and cabbage, for at least three years provides some control. Do not use pepper, eggplant, potato, sunflower or cosmos in this rotation.

Do keep good records of what you plant and where. Beans are a great nitrogen fixer as well.

What about strawbale gardening? There's a whole forum for it. ;)

Well, it might work, but you always have the danger of blight, until time as passed. Even the straw bales break down.
