Hi. We have purchased our plants in the past, but wanted to start them ourselves this year. I have noticed that there are lots of different size pots/containers to choose from. What do you recommend? Is it better to start them in the small square kind, and then transplant them into another larger container, or is it better to start them in the larger ones, and avoid a second transplanting before putting them into the ground? Thanks in advance for your help.
Seed starting advice needed
I find it better to start them in the small containers. For one thing, you're wasting less seed starting mix if you do it that way, and also for the seedlings I find it's harder to overwater them and make them rot if they're in the smaller containers.
You may also want to check out the seed germination forum--it's open to everyone so you should be able to read all the posts over there, and ask your own questions as you get farther along. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/germination/all/
I'm just trying the coffee filter method of starting seeds for the first time this year, and I'm absolutely blown away by the success & speed of it. You'll find the thread for that & using paper towels in the seed germination forum. I'm then putting my seedlings in clear plastic drinking cups (with a hole drilled in the bottom) where they'll stay until they get planted.
