Need pest ID/control

Bloomington, IL

Having been fortunate enough to have been bug free previously I am now at a loss as to what type of pest (or disease) is affecting my houseplants. I have very small, light brown, oval spots that I assume is some kind of egg casing covering my guppy plant and have now moved over to a geranium. I will occasionally see tiny flying "gnats" which I assume are the resulting product of the spots. I have tried a 3 in 1 pesticide/fungicide without much effect. I remove what I can by hand but I'm losing the battle with the guppy plant. Any suggestions would be appreciated before I have to consign a once beautiful plant to the trash.

Can you possibly post a photo? Are the small oval brown spots on the stems or leaves? It could be scale, or it could be some sort of fungus. The flying gnats are fungus gnats. I just recently found an old thread where folks were discussing these critters. Let me go look for it again.

Ok, go here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/536776/ and scroll down to the post by KeyRing on Aug 12, 2005. She gives some info on how to get rid of these bugs!

If you have some sort of bacterial/fungal infection and your treatment didn't work, you may have to try again. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than me will come along with some advice soon. Sorry I'm not much help. I hope you get rid of whatever is affecting your plants soon, you might need to treat every plant in the vicinity of your guppy plant just to make sure whatever it is doesn't spread

The flying gnats could be fungus gnats, but they don't do damage to (or lay eggs on) leaves/stems, so if that's what your flying things are, then the brown things are something else. Can you post a picture of the brown things? If it's on the stems rather than the leaves and they're sort of raised dot looking things, then it's probably scale, but a picture would help confirm that.

Thanks for the assistance. It would appear to be scale after viewing examples. I have sacrificed the main plant and have isolated the geranium and some cuttings I had started from the guppy plant. I will continue to treat those and hope for the best as well as monitor and give preventative treatment to my other plants.
