Asian Jasmin

Sugar Land, TX

I am looking for a ground cover that will work well around tree roots. My Garden Center recommended Asian Jasmin. I can't seem to find any pictures of itt and how it might work out. Can you help me.

It is actually NOT a Jasmin...but sometimes called 'star jasmin'. Really great scent!

I just put in some Arachis pintoi, or in Spanish (Puerto Rico) mani ("mahn-EE"). It's in the peanut family and fixes nitrogen in the soil, which I believe means it actually helps fertilize tree roots. Looks a bit like clover, very vigorous and dark green in full sun, puts out nice little yellow flowers almost constantly. I'm told it's fairly manageable, can be mowed, recovers well from foot traffic. Spreads pretty quickly through stolons, and will cascade over wall edges nicely. Lots of technical info and see more with photos at http://www.tropicalforages.info/key/Forages/Media/Html/Arachis_pintoi.htm

I have that as a volunteer and I love it!!! It grows under my monkeypod tree and I am hoping it will spread. It makes a lovely groundcover and is GREAT for the soil.

I have the Arachis pintoi too, mine has not spread very fast - it's in full sun, any ideas Carol? JP?

I irrigated mine to get it started, fed it some Osmocote, that's all. This was all just within the last couple months, and I can report that the plants have established themselves well, though I cannot yet say they've spread a great deal. I will be back in Vieques in April and report again.

Jenny...it is in full sun mostly...under a huge monkeypod but it IS sunny. I don't find it spreads very quickly...perhaps more fert is needed? Maybe a sprinkling of diluted Dolomite? I must try...I really like it and want it to spread!!!

I saw it used as a lawn in the Philippines...very effective!

Captcin ~ if you get into the medical district in Houston, you will notice all the esplanades and corner beds planted with asian jasmine. It is a dark green waxy leaf, staying evergreen but in my zone, takes on a reddish hue in winter. It is low maintenance although may need trimming once or twice a year to keep it from looking unruly. http://davesgarden.com/community/journals/viewentry/111132/

Another favorite of mine is the variegated asian jasmine. http://davesgarden.com/community/journals/viewentry/111133/ This plant seems to glow at night and planting under trees would be fine for either of these plants. I have never seen these ones bloom or noticed a fragrance. There is a confederate or star jasmine that will bloom for one wonderful month in spring and can be used laterally or as a vine. http://davesgarden.com/community/journals/viewentry/110186/ pod
